AbstractEmploying ethnographic data from the Human Relations Area Files and other sources, this paper sets forth a number of generalizations and tentative hypotheses concerning some possible relations between sexuality and patterns of insult behavior. Available data suggest the hypothesis that sex‐related insults, particularly those which refer to the genitals, are a cultural universal. There are, however, considerable variations between cultures in what kinds of sex‐related insults are considered severe or innocuous. It is hypothesized that the perceived severity of a sex‐related insult is directly related to the salience and seriousness with which different cultures view the sexual acts referred to in the insult. Cultural differences might also exist in the extent to which husbands consider adultery an insult and the ways in which they respond to insults.

AbstractThis paper documents specific aspects of sex and eroticism, as well as related aspects of social behavior, in nine postpubertal male hypopituitary patients without hypogonadotropinism. The data reported on erection, ejaculation, masturbation, erotic imagery, intercourse and dating indicate an inertia of libido in these patients. Evidence for a deficit in socializing and pair‐bonding behavior is also present. Several alternative hypotheses for the observed deficits are considered.

AbstractThe aim of this paper is to systematically apply a sociological perspective, specifically that orientation known as symbolic interactionism, to the area of human sexuality. Our task is both conceptual and empirical. At the conceptual level, we have attempted to interpret and view sexual behavior through the concepts and assumptions provided by the symbolic interaction perspective. At the empirical level we have tried to organize research findings in this area which could be incorporated into this perspective. Suggestions have also been offered on future directions for theoretical development with reference to human sexuality. In short, our purpose is to see how far we can go in viewing sexual behavior as symbolic interaction.

AbstractThe results of a study of 151, 18 to 40 years old lesbian women from four large metropolitan areas in West‐Germany are reported. Particular attention is given to the coming‐out period, to the meaning of heterosexual experiences of lesbians and to the multiple social and psychological problems resulting from being a lesbian in this society.
