摘要:
The purpose of the current studies was to determine if participants would ignore a woman's dislike of sexual material in a laboratory setting. Two experiments (N= 130) were conducted in which participants were asked to show, under the guise of a distraction task, neutral, erotic, or nonerotic distracting slides to a female confederate who was depicted as strongly disliking erotic material. More men than women showed erotic slides to the female confederate who was described as disliking erotic material. Fewer men and more women showed autopsy slides when the female confederate was depicted as disliking erotic material than when she was depicted as feeling neutral about erotic material. These results provide preliminary support for this laboratory paradigm as an analogue of sexually impositional behavior.

摘要:
We assessed ratings of nine themes in commercial pornography to test feminist theory about what is degrading to women in pornography. Ninety‐four female and 89 male college student volunteers rated nine brief excerpts of sexually explicit material. Seven of the nine themes depicted two types of inequalities—active subordination and status inequality; one theme depicted female indiscriminate availability; and one theme depicted equal sex. Participants viewed the themes either with or without accompanying definitions. Consistent with feminist theory, both men and women who viewed the excerpts rated active subordination more degrading than status inequalities and both types of inequalities more degrading than sexually explicit material with equality, with one qualification. Women rated all inequalities and availability more degrading than equal sex, whereas men rated active subordination themes and status inequalities more degrading than nonreciprocated sex, female availability, and equal sex. In general, video clips without the definitions were rated as degrading as those presented with definitions, with some variations in ratings of status inequality themes. Suggestions for future research to assess degrading aspects of pornography are provided.

摘要:
In this article, we critique the literature concerning the prevalence and effects of violent pornography and describe two experiments in which we sought to produce effects of violent pornography on men's fantasies, attitudes, and behaviors toward women. Our critique of the literature revealed that findings for the prevalence and effects of violent pornography are highly inconsistent, and we identified methodological and conceptual limitations that may contribute to the unreliability of findings in this area. Our two experiments involved creation of conditions that should have been sufficient to produce effects of violent pornography on men's fantasies, attitudes, and behaviors toward women, but which produced essentially no such effects. Discussion focuses on factors that may help explain the unreliability of effects of violent pornography on men's fantasies, attitudes, and behaviors toward women, within the research procedures that are commonly used in this area, and on the need to improve methodological and conceptual approaches in studying this important issue.

摘要:
We examined the relationships among sexual self‐identity, sexual and drug use behaviors, and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection among a sample of 224 male street prostitutes. Structured interviews were administered, and blood samples were collected and tested for HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis B. The sample included 17.9% homosexual, 46.4% heterosexual, and 35.7% bisexually identified men. Congruence between the prostitutes’non‐paid sexual behavior and their sexual self‐identification were closest for the heterosexual and homosexual identified men. The significant demographic and occupational differences between the prostitutes in each sexual self‐identity category included education, history of physical abuse, homelessness, and geographical mobility. Based on self‐identification, the rate of HIV infection was 50% for the homosexuals, 36.5% for the bisexuals, and 18.5% for the heterosexuals. The differences in HIV infection rates between the men of each sexual self‐identity category were significantly related to self‐reported receptive anal sex, number of non‐paid sexual partners, cocaine use, injection drug use, acquaintance with a person with AIDS, history of syphilis, and history of hepatitis. Sexual self‐identity was not a significant predictor of HIV serostatus.

摘要:
Lifetime and current sexual and substance use behaviors were examined among 131 predominantly Hispanic and Black gay and bisexual adolescent males in New York City. Many youths engaged in anal sex with males (80%), and 22% bartered sex for money or drugs. Condom use with male partners typically was initiated one year after a youth became sexually active, was more common with male than female partners, and was more common with anal than with oral sex. Condoms with male partners were never or inconsistently used by 52% of youths. Youths reported high rates of lifetime alcohol (76%), marijuana (42%), and cocaine I crack (25%) use; none reported intravenous drug use. Current alcohol and drug use was significantly related to sexual risk acts. These findings indicate that HIV‐preven‐tion programs for homosexual and bisexual male youths are critical and must address sex with females, inconsistent condom use, and sexual practices while under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

摘要:
In 1990, gay men (N= 296) in Sydney, Australia, were asked to recall two sexual encounters from the preceding year: one in which they had unprotected anal intercourse (“unsafe”encounter) and one in which they had resisted a strong temptation to have unprotected intercourse (“safe”encounter). The aims were to record self‐justifications for unprotected intercourse used in the unsafe encounter and to identify situational factors distinguishing between the encounters. Among men who had been HIV infected at the time of the unsafe encounter (n= 88), the most common self‐justification had been the thought that they had nothing more to lose; among uninfected men (n= 207), it had been a resolution to have intercourse without ejaculation. The first factor emerging from a factor analysis of the infected group's self‐justifications involved reactions to a negative mood state; in the uninfected group it involved inferring from perceptible characteristics that the partner was unlikely to be infected. Some variables (e.g., closeness of the relationship to the partner, mood, communication, and use of“dirty talk”) distinguished between the unsafe and safe encounters equally among those who had been infected in both encounters (n= 76) and those who had been uninfected in both (n= 170). Other variables (knowledge that unprotected intercourse is a high risk activity, drug use, use of pornography, and condom availability) did not distinguish between the encounters in either group. Desire to seek adventure and excitement through sex distinguished between the encounters only in the infected group, and level of intoxication did so only in the uninfected group. Results are discussed in relation to those obtained in our earlier studies of gay men in Melbourne; we also discuss how such data might be put to use in AIDS education programs for gay men.
