Differences in haematological and clinicochemical profiles of blood of apparently healthy slaughter pigs collected at the farm and at slaughter were investigated in relation to the severity of pathological‐anatomical lesions. For this purpose blood‐samples of castrated male pigs were collected once at seven different farms and from the same pigs one to three days later at the slaughterhouse.

The kinetics of sulphamethoxazole (SMZ) in plasma and milk, and its metabolism, protein binding and renal clearance were studied in three newborn calves and two dairy cows after intravenous administration. SMZ was predominantly acetylated; no hydroxy and glucuronide derivatives could be detected in plasma and urine. Age‐dependent pharmacokinetics and metabolism of SMZ were observed. The plasma concentration‐time curves of the N4‐acetyl metabolite in the elimination phase were parallel to those of the parent drug; the N4‐acetyl metabolite plasma percentage depended on age and ranged between 100% (new‐born) to 24.5% (cow). SMZ was rapidly eliminated (elimination half‐lives: 2.0–4.7 h) and exhibited a relatively small distribution volume (VDarea: 0.44–0.57 l/kg). SMZ was excreted predominantly by glomerular filtration, while its N4‐acetyl metabolite was actively eliminated by tubular secretion.

Eight hours fasting in Yorkshire terrier pups resulted in marked variation of blood glucose, showing both hypo‐ en hyperglycaemia. Prolonged fasting in three Yorkshire terrier pups resulted in hypoglycaemia with concomittant ketosis and steatosis of the liver. The hypoglycaemia was associated with decreasing insulin and increasing glucagon and cortisol levels. This is in contrast to fasting adult dogs, which maintain glucohomeostasis and show only slightly decreased insulin levels, normal glucagon levels and a moderate increase of plasma ketone bodies. The reaction to an eight hour fasting period in the Yorkshire terrier pups is thought to be related to inadequate gluconeogenesis and diminished insulin production and/ or release. The different reaction to prolonged fasting, compared to adult dogs and pups of larger breeds, seems related to inadequate gluconeogenesis and results in hypoglycaemia, a ketogenic hormonal setting and steatosis of the liver. Frequent feeding of a high‐energy, protein‐rich diet to both mother and pups may prevent toy‐breed pups from developing hypoglycaemia and may help them to overcome periods with a decreased intake of energy.

Between 1967 and 1987, in the Netherlands 3,775 Dobermans were examined for hereditary eye diseases. In 238 of these dogs severe persistent hyperplastic tunica vasculosa lentis and primary vitreous (PHTVL/PHPV) was diagnosed. After a brief description of the clinical features the results of breeding over the recent years are discussed. The incidence (1978–1987) of severely affected dogs in the litter controls decreased from 5% to 1% in the individual controles from 19% to 8%. This is an encouraging downward tendency. Better results are to be expected once test mating and progeny‐testing methods are accepted as breeding methods in dog breeding.

A newly recognised disease, which we have given the provisional name of familial stomatocytosis‐hypertrophic gastritis (FSHG), is described in two families of dogs of the Drentse patrijshond breed. The affected dogs consisted of 3 females and 5 males, 3 to 19 (mean 9.5) months of age at admission. The main clinical problems were diarrhoea, icterus, and ataxia and paresis of the pelvic limbs. Laboratory evaluation revealed abnormal red cell shape (stomatocytosis), increased osmotic fragility, haemolytic anaemia, and increased liver enzymes and serum bilirubin. Gastroscopic and histopathologic examination of the gastric mucosa revealed hypertrophic gastritis resembling Ménétrier's disease in man. Histologic findings in the liver were suggestive of progressive liver disease. Cysts were found in the kidneys of the five oldest patients. Electroneurography in 2 dogs revealed polyneuropathy. In the parents of 2 patients (sister and brother), there were no clinical or laboratory abnormalities. An autosomal recessive hereditary defect of lipid metabolism is suspected.

The contamination of poultry in the Netherlands withSalmonella entcritidiswas tested. For this, different methods(detection ofS. enteritidisin faecal samples of 25 g; detection ofS. enteritidisin cloacal swabs; detection ofS. enteritidisby serological testing of antibodies in serum)were compared for their efficiency to detectS. enteritidisin flocks of poultry. Testing of faecal samples clearly yielded the best results. This method was used in a transmission study, in which 14 flocks descending from a contaminated primary mother flock were screened for the presence ofS. enteritidis.The method was also used for screening 49 flocks of laying hens and 52 flocks of broiler chickens throughout the Netherlands. From the transmission study it became clear thatS. enteritidis,phage type 2(Dutch phage set)was isolated both from the mother flock and from five of the descendent flocks. Screening of poultry flocks for the presence of salmonella revealed that salmonella was present in 47% of the layer flocks and in 94% of the broiler flocks.S. enteritidiswas isolated from 15% of the flocks screened.

Human respiratory syncytial virus (HRSV) is the major respiratory tract Pathogen of infants and young children. Bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV) is recognised as an important cause of respiratory tract disease in calves. Both of these viruses and their respective diseases share many similarities. Immunopathologic mechanisms have been Proposed to be involved in the pathogenesis of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infections. This review examines the current understanding of the role of immunopathologic mechanisms in RSV infections. The role of vaccines in inducing hypersensitivity is also examined. Additionally, non‐immunopathogenic mechanisms involved in RSV infections are discussed.

After an oral dose of 100 mg of sulphaphenazole, the turtle Pseudemys scripta elegans excretes 27% of the compound unchanged and 3.8% as N4‐acetylsulphaphenazole. The expected glucuronide conjugate, sulphaphenazole‐N2‐glucuronide, is not formed and excreted.
