In a series of four papers computerized herd reports on various aspects of dairy farming, the Index Lists, are presented for herd health and production control purposes. This second paper presents Index List 2, on calving, breeding efficiency and lameness. The information from this list is suitable to monitor herd performance, especially when used in combination with information from other index lists.

This third paper deals with Index List 3 on youngstock rearing and cow culling. The information from this list is suitable for monitoring rearing efficience and culling policy in a veterinary herd health and production control programme, especially when used in combination with information from the other index lists.

It was found that 79% of healthy pigs, slaughtered in three different slaughterhouses in the Netherlands, were intestinal carriers ofCampylobacter jejuni(mean number 4000 cfu per g), and 21% of the same pigs had Salmonella in the intestinal tract (mean number 10 cfu per g). Immediately after slaughter, Campylobacter was swabbed from 9% of the carcasses and Salmonella from 13%. It is concluded from these data that most of the contamination on carcasses does not originate directly from the intestinal tracts of the animals but rather from surfaces, equipment, and utensils in the slaughter hall. It was demonstrated that Salmonella could survive in the slaughter hall, whereas Campylobacter died off probably due to its vulnerability to drying conditions and its inability to grow at temperatures below 30° C.

In the period from August 1981 to April 1983, 10243 random samples of urine from slaughtered cattle were inspected for the presence of the stilbene derivatives diethylstilbestrol (DES), dienestrol (DE), and hexestrol (HEX). Fast screening of all samples was performed by radioimmunoassay (RIA) with prior clean‐up column chromatography. In this screening, 216 samples were indicated for confirmatory analyses by combined high performance liquid chromatography‐gas chromatography‐mass spectrometry (HPLC‐GCMS) on account of an immunochemical response equivalent to 1 μg/ 1 DES or more. The presence of DES was confirmed in 184 samples, DE in 5 samples and HEX in 14 samples. In the remaining 13 samples no stilbene derivative could be confirmed.

Bacteriological examination of hatchery waste eggs, identification of the isolated bacteria, and susceptibility testing against seven antimicrobial agents were used in an attempt to establish a rational basis for reducing bacterial infections in newly hatched chicks.

Oxygenation of the 20‐carbon polyunsaturated fatty acid, arachidonic acid, which is found in most body cells of all domestic animals, leads to the formation of a group of compounds possessing biological activity. These compounds, collectively known was eicosanoids, currently receive considerable attention owing to their involvement in a wide variety of physiological and pathophysiological processes.

Since 1981 a highly contagious viral disease causing high morbidity and low mortality in racing pigeons has spread over Europe. The virus belongs to the avian paramyxovirus sero group I. Clinical signs include watery droppings, polydypsia and neurologic signs in a high proportion of infected animals.
