The development of the mandibular cheek teeth was examined, both visually and by radiograph, in a group of 76 Hereford cross Friesian steers, of which all but one were slaughtered at the same weight ‐ 464 kg (1020 lb).

A Complement Fixation Test (CFT) was developed for the diagnosis of Erysipelas infections. The results of that work were compared with those of the Growth Inhibition Test (GIT), and they showed that the CFT test was very useful to determine whether an animal had been vaccinated or was still suffering from the disease. The CFT is as reliable as the GIT in detecting recent as well as chronic infections, but its value is limited where animals are examined for their response to a vaccination.

Five hundred and twenty‐one dogs, at least one year of age, visiting a private veterinary clinic in Paramaribo, were examined from August 1977 till August 1978. Twenty‐six per cent had microfilariae of Dirofilaria immitis in their peripheral blood. The mean number per infected dog was 9,689 per ml of blood (range 14 to 78,984 per ml). Microfilaria positivity rates were significantly greater in older dogs, and there were significantly more abnormal SGPT values in positive than in negative dogs, but there were no significant associations between positivity rate and alcalic phosphatase, ureum, or creatinin values, presence of clinical symptoms, presence of antibodies to Dirofilaria immitis (measured by the direct Immuno Fluorescent Antibody test), sex, breed nor neighbourhood of residence of the dogs.

An enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and the agar gel immunodiffusion test with bovine leukosis virus glycoprotein as antigen (AGIDT‐BLV gp) were further used to test 633 bovine sera for antibodies to BL V. Both tests detected the same number of sera positive (149) or negative (464) for antibodies. Nine sera were negative in the ELISA but found to be weakly positive (2 sera) or bending the control line (7) in the AGIDT‐BLV gp. On the other hand 11 sera were scored negative in the AGIDT‐BLV gp but were weakly positive (9 sera), positive (1), and strongly positive (I) in the ELISA. Both tests are used routinely in this Institute as they complement each other, specially if sera with low antibody titers are under investigation. It is concluded that ELISA can fully replace radioimmunoassays in the serodiagnosis of enzootic bovine leukosis.

In this communication the test procedure is described for an indirect enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for the detection of antibodies against bovine leukosis virus (BLV). Test sera are incubated in polystyrene microtiter plates sensitized with a partly‐purified preparation of BLV. Bovine antibodies are detected with anti‐species immunoglobulin conjugated to the enzyme horseradish peroxidase, followed by the addition of the enzyme substrate.

Puncture of the milk cisterns was performed in 120 bacteriologically positive quarters of forty‐seven lactating dairy cows on three farms. This method was used to determine whether the existing infection was an infection of the teat canal or one of the udder. The results were related to the concentration of bovine serum albumin (BSA) and the cell count in the milk. Of the bacteriologically negative quarters, both BSA levels (in 91 per cent of the quarters the BSA concentration was 0.20 mg. per ml. of milk or less) and cell counts (92 per cent contained less than 500,000 cells per ml. of milk) were low. In cases of udder infection with primary pathogenic bacteria there was a marked increase in cell count (90 per cent more than 500,000 cells per ml. of milk), whereas the increase in BSA was rather small (51 per cent still contained 0.20 mg. BSA per ml. of milk or less). While the difference in cell counts of milk from quarters with udder infections and teat canal infections with primary pathogenic bacteria was significant, the difference between the BSA levels of these two groups was not. Therefore, the cell count supplies more reliable information than does the BSA level of the milk. Of all infections, 23 per cent were found to be infections of the teat canal.

The incidence, size and location of mammary nodules were established in 10 practices in The Netherlands by the clinical examination of bitches in which oestrus was controlled with proligestone (P), 331 animals, or medroxyprogesterone acetate (MAP), 341 animals and in 339 animals never medicated with such compounds.
