AbstractThe purpose of this paper is to develop a framework for the application of proportional hazard modelling to plant maintenance. Two regimes are investigated; a good‐as‐new regime where the hazard rate of the system is refreshed by either failure or preventive maintenance action, and a bad‐as‐old regime where only preventive maintenance action refreshes the hazard rate. The output of the analysis is the recommendation of optimal preventative maintenance plans under both of these regimes. Data for a local firm are used to illustrate the models. The inclusion of proportional hazard modelling is shown to yield improved maintenance plans in both regimes. AbstractThis paper explores the potential for the use of expert systems in total quality management (TQM). The study was carried out under the auspices of the first multi‐company programme of research into TQM. Among the findings are that it is feasible to run expert systems on personal (and other) computers in order to assist with aspects of TQM such as statistical process control, quality costing, goods receiving, corrective action procedures, supplier development, quality function deployment and field failure analysis, and that the potential application of expert systems to TQM was received with some degree of enthusiasm by the personnel with whom the concept was discussed. AbstractThis paper outlines the main findings of a research study which examined the experiences of small companies in relation to approaching the BS.5750/ISO 9000 quality system series. In general, small companies are not aware of the fundamental concepts of a quality system, many of the activities outlined in BS.5750 are not practised and, even when they are, they are not documented. The main motivation for introducing a quality system which meets the requirements of BS.5750 is customer pressure. Difficulties encountered by small companies are selecting which part of the standard to apply, understanding and applying the appropriate clauses of BS.5750 to their own specific situations, and writing procedures.

AbstractHighly reliable products that will last for a long time can result in the impracticality of conducting life testing at the designed normal usage conditions. When accelerated life tests can be applied to represent the normal product operating conditions with a shorter testing time, engineers usually terminate the accelerated life test upon successfully running to a multiple of a pre‐specified bogey without any failure. This testing philosophy is called ‘bogey test’ or ‘extended test’ in the automotive industry and is a subset of type I censored tests in standard reliability literature. This paper focuses on the determination of sample size when planning or assessing the applicability of such a bogey test. AbstractThe Taguchi idea of parameter design has received considerable attention from statisticians and engineers. However, it is only recently that some of the underlying principles of his ideas have been clarified and other alternative procedures have been proposed. This paper reviews the currently available procedures for parameter design in terms of minimizing expected loss. Advantages and disadvantages of each procedure are discussed for the three types of performance characteristics, and guidelines are provided for the choice of an appropriate procedure for a given parameter design problem.
