摘要:
AbstractTaguchi's robust design strategy, whose aim is to make processes and products insensitive to factors which are hard or impossible to control (termed noise factors), is an important paradigm for improving products and processes. We present an overview of the strategy and tactics for robust design and demonstrate its usefulness for reliability improvement. Two important components of robust design are a criterion for assessing the effect of the noise factors and experimentation according to specialized experimental plans. Recent criticism of Taguchi's criterion and his analysis of its estimates has led to an alternative approach of modelling the response directly. We give additional reasons for using this response‐model approach in the context of reliability improvement. Using the model for the response, appropriate criteria for assessing the effect of the noise factors can then be evaluated. We consider an actual experiment and reanalyse its data to illustrate these ideas and metho

摘要:
AbstractUnder pressure for cost reduction, a semi‐automated grey iron foundry was experimenting with alternative supply sources of the moulding sand additives, bentonite and coal dust. During a period when increasing quantities of possible replacement materials were being blended with current supplies it was noticed that the previously high or erratic level of rejects in a small group of products was progressively improving. In the absence of a real understanding of the reason for the improvement and in an endeavour to ensure that adequate safeguards were in place to avoid any relapse, a statistical examination was undertaken of the green sand and metal subsystems. The behaviour of the variables in these subsystems was analysed for a datum period before and after the decision to change the sources of supply. Using existing process records and applying appropriate statistical techniques a clear indication was obtained that factors outside those of bentonite and coal dust were also involved in the improvement. The use of factorial analysis demonstrated the relative significance of the sand and metal variables and the existence of any interactions. The use of box and whisker plots gave a good indication of the desirable control limits for the key variables. Analysis of the follow‐up period revealed a reduction of 90 per cent in the level of rejects for one high volume l

摘要:
AbstractA primary requirement of quality‐based design and offline quality control methods is the determination of nominal design parameter values which are such as to minimize the risk that the resulting device or system will function inadequately, or fail, under specified operational conditions. It may also be desirable to control the degree of variability in certain properties or outputs of the device or system. Both requirements are to be satisfied, in the presence of unavoidable tolerances on component parameters, which may also have been optimized, using a cost balance criterion. It is shown that these requirements can be expressed in terms of constrained optimization of probability contents of defined sets in the space of the design parameters and that the probabilities can be estimated using well‐established convolution methods, permitting optimization by standard numerical methods. This procedure avoids the need for simulation or the use of specialized statistical techniques based on analysis of variance, and may permit solution of such problems by non‐specialists using available computing facilities. It does, however, require a suitable probability model to be associated with the design variables of interest. Analytic and numerical examples are presented and discussed. For those readers unfamiliar with the theoretical methods employed, Section 1.2 provides a qualitative description of the method and may be read in conjunction with the examples of Sect

AbstractThis paper reviews the fundamental ideas involved in robust engineering design (RED), and how they relate to computer‐aided design. There are several areas of RED that may be successfully resolved by the use of statistical methods or ideas. This paper gives a general overview of several popular statistical strategies in RED and discusses how these strategies approach the statistical problems involve

摘要:
AbstractThere are two fundamental goals which are universal in business. The first is to grow market share, and the second to grow profits. In order to accomplish these goals, the company must differentiate itself from its competitors, in the customer's view, in one or more of the five following areas: (1) price, (2) delivery, (3) performance, (4) quality, (5) total customer experience.Stressing one area of differentiation to the exclusion of the others will not achieve the goals. For example, in stressing price alone, a company has defined its products as a commodity and as Dev Dion of the Strategic Planning Institute once said, ‘The producers of commodities reap commensurate rewards.’ Similarly, stressing fast delivery of a product of poor quality, or stressing superior quality for a product providing marginally useful performance are both losing strategies. The only strategy I know of which provides equally balanced focus on all five major areas of differentiation is total customer satisfaction, as the fundamental objective of the company. Bob Galvin, when Chairman of Motorola, summed it up by saying, ‘If you take care of the customer better than any of your competition, the business will take care of itself.’ In saying this, however, he meant not only the product, but all of the other ways in which you and the customer i

摘要:
AbstractThe Rainbow net simulation technique is applied to modelling the impact of system load and fault handling on the availability of a fault‐tolerant multiprocessor architecture. Rainbow nets are described along with the motivation for creating this modelling technique. A Rainbow net fault‐handling model is created for the fault‐tolerant multiprocessor architecture and the topology is shown to remain constant in size, independent of the number of processor, memory and I/O elements configured in the system. Simulation is performed with a varying load in terms of the number of active jobs the system must support. Results are given showing how the fault‐tolerant capability varies with load. Two new metrics for evaluating fault tolerance are introduced; namelyfull fault‐tolerability and partial fault‐tolerability. They are based on simple observations i

摘要:
AbstractIn electronic device manufacturing, a significant amount of time is spent testing the product using sophisticated test sets. These test sets routinely develop hardware problems that cause disruption of the manufacturing process. This paper discusses how computerized networking of test sets can be used to systematically monitor and detect these hardware problems. A statistical methodology for modelling and analysing test set data is presented, along with a detailed specific example.
