AbstractA novel mechanical technique for decapsulating plastic semiconductor components has been developed. The technique is extremely easy to use, has a high success rate, and is superior in all respects to previously‐described mechanical techniques which give inconsistent results. AbstractIn a study conducted for the USAF Rome Air Development Center to improve reliability prediction for spacecraft approximately 2600 incident reports on 300 spacecraft (representing 100 programmes) that were launched between the early 1960s and January 1984 were analysed. The causes of the spacecraft failures and the severity of the observed effects are examined.The classification of causes is explained in detail and examples of each type of failure are provided. Differences in the relative frequency of certain causes between pre‐1977 missions and later ones are analysed and some significant trends are identified. The association of spacecraft subsystems with the major causes of failure is investigated. Finally, the severity of the failure effects due to the identified cause categories is discussed. A significant finding is that a large fraction of the incidents is due to design and environmental causes rather than to random failure

AbstractApproximations are given relating the shape parameter of the two‐parameter Weibull distribution to the coefficient of variation of a complete (uncensored) data set. The accuracy of the approximations over 0.4<β<5 is such as to give adequate estimates in most practical applications. 摘要:
AbstractThe availability of good data is crucial to good reliability prediction. Two contrasting cases are noted: (1) when a large amount of experience with components is available but data are not collected and (2) when systems are so innovative that no reliability experience is available. The relationship of reliability to incompleteness of knowledge and the acausal nature of statistical/probabilistic models is discussed. The difficulty of assigning any absolute similarity between any one component and the members of a particular reliability set is outlined. It is concluded that engineering judgement must always play a vital role in reliability estimation.

AbstractSubstantial laboratory and field experience has indicated that, owing to the large number of wave stress cyles experienced by offshore steel structures, fatigue cracking should be the main consideration of structural reliability assessment.This paper presents the latest implementation of probabilistic fracture mechanics modelling for fatigue reliability analysis of the most common offshore structural component, the welded tubular joints. Coupled with the recent findings in inspection reliability, effective maintenance and integrity monitoring policies can be formulated.Examples of many practical situations have been analysed to illustrate the applications of the methodology.
