To remain competitive in a growing world-wide market place, manufacturing companies have to continuously and seriously consider plant and production modernization. Process re-engineering leads to new and improved manufacturing operations often, through the use of new process and production technologies. For many processes such as heating, drying and curing there are several alternative electrotechnologies which present viable, highly effective and reliable solutions.

This article describes thePerformance Optimization Studyof a cement kiln induced draft system and subsequent installation of high efficiency fan impellers. Three problematic areas are addressed: low fan efficiency, aerodynamically caused vibrations, and high fan starting time.

Maintenance costs can significantly influence the economic feasibility of lighting retrofits in certain types of facilities. If a lighting system is too complex, (or expensive to repair) it will not be maintained and will fail. Energy will not be saved, and the company could be reluctant to engage in future lighting retrofits. With the increasing number of complex lighting systems on the market today, a “reality check” is appropriate. What may seem simple to a lighting designer might be complicated for a maintenance person, who may not have time to focus solely on learning about lighting systems.
