摘要:
The role and importance of insight to the change process has been debated for many years. Strategists have given a significant amount of attention to discrediting insight and in the process have not considered its strategic advantages. This article will clarify the role of insight in strategic therapy and make distinctions between therapist‐ascribed meaning (reframing) and interpretation, as well as client‐ascribed meaning and insight. It will be argued that insight‐oriented and strategic therapists share much in common and that insight, perhaps contrary to the current view, indeed has a role in the practice of strategic th

摘要:
This study explores the Family‐of‐Origin Scale (FOS) with regard to its validity and potential use. Subjects included 100 adults currently in psychotherapy, 100 who were not, 32 who previously had sought treatment, and 41 college students. Between‐group comparisons, correlations with both the 16PF and a scale of authoritarianism, factor analyses of both the patient and nonpatient FOS responses, and a review of patient feedback revealed several significant results. The FOS differentiates between patients and nonpatients, but it measures only one general factor and delivers little information. Therefore, it has little value as a research instrument, but it may be a useful adjunct to psychotherapy in individual

摘要:
A family systems perspective was used to explore familial transactional patterns related to anorexia nervosa. Father, mother and daughter, interpersonal assessments of parental initiative and daughter responsive behaviors as reported on Benjamin's (1974) Structural Analysis of Social Behavior (SASB), were combined to serve as data for a hierarchical cluster analysis. Out of the 22 families with an anorexic child and the 22 matched control families, 7 family groups with unique family dynamics differentiating one from another emerged out of the clustering procedure. Prototypic family profiles were established and examined using Benjamin's (1984) program Figure (FIG) to explicate central features of the family transactional relationships. With no single family pattern characterizing the families of the anorexic daughters, the study challenges earlier family theories that postulated a single anorexogenic family system, and supports a broader, more complex view of anorexics and their families.

摘要:
All family therapists, and especially Milan‐style systemic therapists, have been trained to take a neutral stance regarding family issues, based on a circular causality model of family interaction. Therefore, when therapists deal with family violence, their ability to perceive individual responsibility for unethical behavior is weakened or suppressed. In fact, this ability is the primary tool in developing effective treatment planning in cases of family violence: The actively physically abusive man needs to be in individual and/or group therapy, not conjoint or family therapy. The ethical judgment of the therapist is what determines the limits of family therap

摘要:
Drawing on Maturana's concept of structure determinism and Bowlby's attachment theory, a model of marital interactions is described based on the nature of the “fit” between each individual's belief systems, particularly those related to the fears inherent in intimacy. It is proposed that these marital interactions can be either belief‐con firming, leading to alienation, conflict and unhappiness, or belief‐disconfirming, leading to intimacy, successful conflict resolution and happiness. Suggestions are made as to how therapists can intervene in troubled relationships to facilitate negative belief‐disconfirming interactions, interrupt negative belief‐confirming interactions and prevent the development of negative belief‐generating

摘要:
To assess the validity and clinical utility of the marital inventory ENRICH, a discriminant validity study was conducted using a national sample of 5039 married couples. The sample was randomly split in order to form a cross‐validation group. ENRICH is a multidimensional scale and two types of analysis were conducted to assess the value of these various scales. Results from discriminant analysis indicated that using either the individual scores or couples' scores, happily married couples could be discriminated from unhappily married couples with 85–95% accuracy. These results were cross‐validated with a second sample. Using regression analysis, it was clearly demonstrated that background factors account for little of the variance in discriminating happy from unhappily married couples compared to their relationship dynamics, i.e., scale scores. All ENRICH scales except equalitarian roles proved significant, indicating the validity of a multidimensional inve

摘要:
There has been an increase in specialization programs that offer an introduction to marital and family therapy at the master's level. These programs are often referred to as major, minor, track, sequence, or area of emphasis. They typically consist of one or two theory/overview courses housed within a traditional counseling/therapy department. This paper discusses some of the problems with this model and then offers an alternative that attempts to improve conceptual integration and skill development. The alternative model discussed is an interdisciplinary three‐course sequence in family assessment concepts and skills. Course descriptions and objectives are provided and discusse
