SUMMARYThe diagnostic terms navicular disease, podotrochlitis and podotrochlosis are discussed, and details given of the radiographic examination of the navicular bone and the interpretation of the pathological changes detected.An evaluation of the histopathological changes of the navicular bone is followed by views on research concerning the hereditary aspects.It is concluded, by comparing the progeny of the two leading stallions, that a familial tendency exists towards the development of navicular disease. Some long and short term measures are suggested to prevent Dutch bred riding horses from inheriting this familial tendency, and so reduce the number of clinical cases of navicular disease and delay its development.RÉSUMÉLes significations diagnostiques des terms maladie naviculaire, podotrochléite et podotrochleose sont discutées. Des détails sont donnés sur l'examen radiographiques de l'os naviculaire et sur l'interprètation des changements pathologiques qui peuvent se produire.L'évaluation des changements histopathologiques pouvant survenir sur l'os naviculaire est suivie d'une opinion sur la recherche des facteurs héreditaires dans cette affection. On en conclut, en comparant la descendance de deux étalons prééminents qu'il existe une tendance familiale à cette maladie.Des mesures à court terme et à long terme sont recommandécs pour épargner aux chevaux de Selle Hollandais de transmettre cette hérédité, afin que puisse être réduite l'incidence de la maladie naviculaire ou que son apparition en soit retardée.ZUSAMMENFASSUNGDie diagnostischen Bezeichnungen “Strahlbeinlahmheit”, “Podotrochlitis” und “Podotrochlosis” werden diskutiert. Eine Bewertung der histopathologischen Veränderungen am Strahlbein wird gefolgt von Ansichten über die Erforschung der Vererbung. Es wird aus dem Vergleich der Nachkommen zweier wichtiger Hengste geschlossen, dass eine familiäre Tendenz zur Entwicklung der Strahlbeinlahmheit bestehe. SUMMARYDeceleration of heart and respiratory rates after exercise may be influenced by many factors including administration of drugs prior to exercise. Both rates fell more rapidly in Thoroughbreds than in heavyweight hunters and, in the latter, environmental temperature markedly influenced recovery times. SUMMARYGgl has a sufficiently wide therapeutic range for safe use in horses. Three to four times the amount required to cast a horse can be infused before death occurs.Tranquillized and untranquillized horses were cast using ggl. In other experimental groups, sodium thiamylal or sodium thiamylal and succinylcholine were added following premedication with ggl.Muscular rigidity and undesirable periods of struggling occurred occasionally during the casting procedure, and could not be prevented completely by either of the drug combinations used.Ggl was found useful when placing horses on tilting tables. The casting method described by Schebitz and Tronicke was equally safe. Effective casting was also achieved when the horse was supported by several men, or when it was placed in the corner of a box stall and allowed to slide down a wall after infusing the ggl and sodium thiamylal.Twenty‐three horses were cast seven times within 36 days using ggl combined with thiamylal or with thiamylal and succinylcholine. Anaesthesia was maintained on sodium thiamylal for periods varying between 15 and 70 minutes.Haematological studies before and after repeated casting revealed no significant changes.Ggl could be used as a short acting sedative in standing animals, and as a means of restraint for recumbent patients for transport or obstetrical manipulations.Some effects of chloral hydrate and ggl are compared.RÉSUMÉLe gaiacolate de glyceryl présente une marge de sécurité suffisante pour permettre son emploi chez le cheval. Trois ou quatre fois la dose nécessaire pour coucher un cheval peut être administrée avant que ne survienne la mort. Des chevaux tranquillisés et ultra tranquillisés furent couchés en utilisant le gaiacolate de glyceryl. Dans d'autres groupes expérimentaux le thiamylal de sodium et la succinylcholine furent ajoutés a une prémédication utilisant le gaiacolate de glyceryl.Une certaine rigidité musculaire et des périodes désagréables d'agitation se produisirent parfois durant l'abattage et ne purent être complètement évitées quelle que soit l'association employée.Le gaiacolate de glyceryl parut spécialement utile pour placer des chevaux sur des tables basculantes. La méthode d'abattage décrite par Schabitz et Tromiche parut également satisfaisante. Un abattage efficace put également être réalisé quant l'animal put être soutenu par plusieurs hommes ou lorsqu'il fut placé dans l'angle d'un box de telle façon qu'il put glisser le long du mur après l'injection de gaiacolate de glyceryl et de thiamylal de sodium.Vingt trois chevaux furent abattus sept fois durant une période de 36 jours, en utilisant le gaiacolate de glyceryl en association avec le thiamylal et la succinylcholine. L'anesthésie fut maintenue sur le thiamylal de sodium pour des périodes allant de 15 à 70 minutes.Les contrôles hématologiques effectués avant et après abattage ne revèlèrent aucun changement significatif. Le gaiacolate de glyceryl put être utilisé comme sédatif bref sur l'animal debout, et comme moyen de contention pour des animaux couchés soit pour le transport soit pour des manipulations obstétricales. Quelques effets de l'hydrate de chloral et du gaiacolate de glyceryl sont comparés.ZUSAMMENFASSUNGGlycerin Guajacolat besitzt eine genügende therapeutische Breite, um beim Pferd gefahrlos angewendet werden zu können. Die für das Niederlegen benötigte Menge kann um das Drei‐ bis Vierfache gesteigert werden, bevor mit Todesfällen zu rechnen ist.Sedierte und ultra‐sedierte Pferde wurden mit Ggl. niedergelegt. In andern Versuchsgruppen wurde Natrium‐Thiamylal und Succinylcholin der Praemedikation mit Ggl. beigefügt.Muskelsteifheit und unerwünschte Abwehrperioden wurden gelegentlich beim Niederlegen beobachtet und konnte mit keiner der Kombinationen ganz vermieden werden.Ggl. erwies sich als nützlich beim Verbringen von Pferde auf kippbare Tische. Die Methode zum Niederlegen von Schebitz und Troniche erwies sich ebenfalls als sicher. Das Niederlegen verlief auch reibungslos, wenn das Pferd von mehreren Männern gestützt wurde, oder wenn es in einer Boxenecke der Wand entlang zu Boden gleiten konnte nach der Infusion von Ggl. und Na‐Thiamylal.Dreiundzwanzig Pferde wurden innert 36 Tagen je sieben Mal mit Ggl. und Thiamylal oder mit Thiamylal und Succinylcholin niedergelegt. Eine Narkosedauer von 15 bis 70 Minuten wurde mit Na‐Thiamylal aufrechterhalten.Haematologische Untersuchungen vor und nach wiederholtem Niederlegen zeigten keine signifikanten Veränderungen. Ggl. konnte als kurzwirkendes Sedativum am stehenden Tier gebraucht werden und auch zur Beruhigung während des Transports festliegender Pferde oder bei der

SUMMARYSeveral forms of chronic pulmonary disease in the horse can be differentiated, to some extent, by simple means within the scope of every clinician. The proposed diagnostic system permits more precise diagnoses, which are supported by histopathological evidence. Such diagnoses justify a reasonably accurate prognosis of a horse's chance of recovery. They also have been used as a basis for constructing a pathogenetic model.Among the factors involved in the pathogenesis of chronic pulmonary disease, ageing has probably been overrated.Climatic changes influence the symptomatology and the course of chronic pulmonary disease in certain horses.There seems to be a cause‐effect relationship between the occurrence of bronchiolitis and emphysema. Viral influenza combined with bad management seems to be important in the development of chronic bronchiolitis.Allergic phenomena have been involved pathogenetically in at least 25 per cent of our cases. The reactions and symptomatology in the horse correspond well with those known in human bronchial asthma (Type I reactions); the significance of the findings indicating the existence of a Type III reaction is not yet clear.RÉSUMÉPlusieurs formes de maladies pulmonaires chroniques propres au cheval peuvent être distinguées, jusqu'à un certain point, par des moyens simples à la portée de tout clinicien. Le système diagnostic proposé permet un diagnostic plus précis, qui correspond à des évidences histo‐pathologiques. A l'aide de ces diagnostics, un pronostic meilleur parait possible. On les a également employés pour élaborer un shéma pathogénétique.Parmi les facteurs intervenant dans la pathogénie des maladies pulmonaires chroniques, il apparait que l'âge et le vieillissement ont été surestimés. Des variations climatériques modifient la symptomatologie et l'évolution des maladies pulmonaires chroniques chez certains chevaux.Par ailleurs, il semble y avoir une relation de cause à effet entre l'existence de bronchiolite et l'emphysème. Les grippes virales semblent avoir une certaine importance dans l'apparition de bronchiolite chronique, notamment en cas de soins médiocres.Les phénomènes allergiques paraissent avoir joué un rôle dans au moins 25% des cas considérés. Les réactions et les symptômes chez le cheval sont comparables à ceux connus pour l'asthme de l'homme (réactions de Type I). SUMMARYRadiography using a stabilization paper and a stabilization processor is available and could be valuable in large animal practice. The processor is easily transported and can be used in any dark area where a 115 volt power supply is available. A finished positive radiographic print can be produced in 10 seconds. Good image quality was obtained in pilot studies.It was possible to demonstrate small fracture fragments, vascular channels in the third phalanx and navicular bone, and bone trabeculae. The high contrast and low sensitivity of the stabilization paper necessitated separate exposures for evaluation of soft tissues and bones, and an exposure 7.5 times that used for conventional radiographic film.RÉSUMÉLa radiographie avec emploi d'un papier fixateur et d'un dispositif fixateur est possible et parait devoir être utile chez les grands animaux. Le dispositif de développement est facilement transporté et peut être utilisé dans n'importe quelle zone obscure où un courant de 115 Volts est accessible. Une radiographie positive définitive est obtenue en 10 secondes. De bonnes images furent obtenues. SUMMARYA number of pulmonary function tests were performed on a group of normal horses and on a group suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Horses with C.O.P.D. were found to have an increased mean inspiratory and expiratory flow rate, a decreased dynamic compliance, a decreased V.i./Max. Δ P.pl. value and elevated values for the effort of breathing.Most of these changes, indicating the obstructive nature of the ventilatory dysfunction, could be normalised temporarily by an intravenous injection of atropine sulphate. Treatment with corticosteroids and antibiotics gave rise to clinical healing, and to pulmonary function parameters such as those obtained after the injection of atropine. Although the immediate results were very satisfactory, the symptoms recurred in a large percentage of the horses.RÉSUMÉUn certain nombre de tests de la fonction pulmonaire a été retenu: tests qui ont été effectués sur un groupe de chevaux normaux et sur un groupe de chevaux souffrant de maladie pulmonaire chronique. Ces derniers montrèrent un débit respiratoire moyen accru tant à l'inspiration qu'à l'expiration, et des valeurs élevées pour l'effort respiratoire.La plupart des changements constatés, significatifs de la nature obstructive du trouble de la ventilation, purent être corrigés par une injection intraveineuse de sulfate d'atropine. Le traitement avec des corticoides et des antibiotiques eut pour conséquence une guérison clinique et l'obtention de paramètres respiratoires tels que ceux obtenus par l'injection d'atropine. Encore que les résultats immédiats aient été satisfaisants, dans un grand nombre de cas on assista à des récidives.ZUSAMMENFASSUNGEine Anzahl von Lungenfunktionsprüfungen wurden bei einer Gruppe gesunder Pferde und einer Gruppe mit chronisch‐obstruktiven Lungenkrankheiten durchgeführt. Pferde mit chronisch‐obstruktiven Leiden zeigen eine erhöhte, durchschnittliche inspiratorische und exspiratorische Durchflussrate, eine herabgesetzte dynamische Compliance, einen verminderten v.i./Max. Δ P.pl.‐Wert und erhöhte Werte für die Atemarbeit.Die meisten dieser Veränderungen, die die obstruktive Natur der Atmungsdysfunktion anzeigen, konnten temporär durch die intravenöse Injektion von Atropinsulfat normalisiert werden. SUMMARYSoil analyses are recorded for 30 paddocks grazed by horses. The variations which were observable by eye were directly associated with over grazing by horses.
