Abstract –A cross‐sectional clinical study showed that the prevalence of caries among Indonesian soldiers was low, compared with that found in corresponding Western populations. Also, the progression of caries was very slow, and caries was limited almost exclusively to the occlusal surfaces of the teeth. Among officers, the prevalence of caries was lower than it was among other ranks of the same age. The low general prevalence of caries among Indonesian soldiers may be related to diet. Rice was the major source of carbohydrate for the soldiers, and their sucrose consumption was 10 kg per person per year. Their drinking water contained a low concentration of fluoride (0.1 ppm). In spite of massive accumulations of calculus, the periodontal health of young soldiers (<26 yr) was also good. Among those in higher age groups, however, periodontal health had deteriorated, but even in a group aged 40–46 yr, no teeth had been lost as a result of periodontal disease. Among officers, periodontal health was better than it was amongst other ranks of corresponding age. The officers had been accustomed to brushing their teeth regularly, whereas the other ranks had not. Abstract –The aim was to assess the caries predictive ability of gingival state, salivary counts of lactobacilli andS. mutans, salivary secretion rate and buffer capacity of the saliva from the ages of 5 to 7 yr. The material comprised 105 children who were examined once a year. All available screening levels were systematically tested for the single variables as well as for combinations of two or three variables. The screening levels were set where the highest possible sensitivity and specificity were reached simultaneously. The predictive values for positive and negative tests were then calculated. TheS. mutanscount turned out to have the best combination of sensitivity (0.41) and specificity (0.83). The single variables gingival state andS. mutanshad constant screening levels, while the values for lactobacilli and buffer capacity varied. The saliva secretion rate could not be measured at 5 yr of age. Systematic analyses of predictive ability of combinations of two or three variables were then performed and did not result in any clinically significant improvements of the predictive ability. Abstract –Strains of A. actinomycetemcomitans (A.a) from juvenile periodontitis patients (JP), adult periodontitis patients (AP), and 14‐yr‐old healthy children were tested for the correlation between leukotoxin activity and the number of outer membranous vesicles measured in electron micrographs. To determine the potential for connective tissue destruction following the interaction of polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN) with the bacteria, the lysosomal release of neutro‐phil elastase was assessed. The highest potential to kill leukocytes and to release lysosomal elastase from them was observed in the strains isolated from JP patients. No correlation existed between leukotoxic activity and the number of outer membranous vesicles per bacterium when the data from A.a. strains from all sources were combined. Furthermore, no significant differences were found between the numbers of outer membranous vesicles in the three groups tested. Abstract –Fusobacterium nucleatumstrains ATCC 10953, Fevl, F1, F3, and F6 utilized amino acids, in particular glutamate, histidine, and aspartate were common to all strains. Strain differences were observed in the utilization of threonine, serine, lysine, tyrosine, and methionine, and only strain ATCC 10953 utilized all these amino acids. The glutamate and histidine pools were in all cases fully depleted before the other amino acids were attacked and at the same time all strains except 10953 started to utilize peptides at a noticeable rate. For strain Fevl, glutamyl‐and aspartyl‐containing peptides seemed to be of considerable nutritional importance, and this strain did not grow on a medium based on amino acids alone. Abstract –The cell envelope ofWolinella rectawas studied by electron microscopy. In thin sections the surface layer (S‐layer) seemed to be in close contact to the outer membrane (OM). A hexagonally arranged pattern of the S‐layer was revealed by freeze‐etching. Unlike in other oral bacteria with an S‐layer, the cleavage occurred along the S‐layer by freeze‐fracture, suggesting an exceptionally tight relationship between the two outermost layers. Abstract –The aim of the present study was to evaluate how dental professionals with identical and different backgrounds assess dental anomalies viewed on panoramic radiographs. 101 panoramic radiographs performed of 9‐to‐10‐yr‐old children were examined independently by three orthodontists and two radiologists. All observers agreed on the recording of number and identification of congenitally missing permanent teeth. The observers' assessments of malpositioned teeth, teeth in infraocclusion, and primary teeth with atypical/non root resorption varied, however, to a great extent. Two of the orthodontists seemed to report only major deviations from normality (in 38 and 51 of the children respectively) while one reported several more findings (in 85 children). The radiologists reported abnormal findings in 80 and 88 children respectively. In only three children were no dental anomalies reported by any observer. The inconsistent reporting of the majority of dental anomalies (except for agenesis) in children, even among members of subgroups with a similar educational background (e.g. orthodontists), substantiates the need for an evaluation of the expedience of panoramic

Abstract –A method for measuring pin‐ or pinhole‐deviation was developed and tested on nine consecutive bridge cases with parallel pin retention, in order to assess paralleling precision of guiding instruments used clinically. Measurements were performed on rubber base impressions including pinholes, involving the use of a stereomicroscope. The maximum pinhole error angle for the bridges investigated ranged between 5.9 and 16.1 degrees. The corresponding interval for abutments was 1.3–10.8 degrees. The experimental observations concerning the rather large values for the greatest pinhole deviation of fitting bridges could be satisfactorily explained theoretically. The results indicated that the magnitude of the largest permissible angular deviation for a restoration with parallel pin retention was significantly larger than that previously presented in the literature. Abstract –151 patients referred to the Department of Oral Diagnosis, University of Umeå, for investigation regarding potential side‐effects of dental materials were subjected to epicutaneous testing at a dermatology clinic. Twelve persons in this group had oral mucosal changes. Among the 151 patients 39 women and 7 men had positive skin reactions to one or more of the test substances used. The majority of the positive reactions were related to metals, particularly nickel, but a number of positive reactions to organic test substances were also noted. In many cases the substance which caused the positive skin reaction was also a known constituent of the restorative or prosthetic materials present in the oral cavity of the patient concerned. Abstract –The objective with this study was to investigate how the shear bond strength of a phosphate based dentinal bonding agent is influenced by storage in saline at 37°C up to 6 months. The effect of dentin bonding agent on the leachability of calcium fron dentin was also determined. The results showed that the shear bond strength decreased after saline storage. After half a year, the strength was ca. 60%, of the initial dry strength. The bonding agent also accelerated the leaching of calcium from the dentin discs, a finding which was explained as being a result of acidic reactions occurring at the dentin‐bonding agent interface. In addition to the increased calcium leachability, the dentin bonding agent peeled off with time from the dentin discs. SEM investigation of the dentin surfaces after either shear strength determination or the film had peeled off due to water storage showed that a residual film was left on the dentin.
