Abstract–The use of the enamel surface terms perikymata and imbrications/imbrication lines in the dental literature is inconsistent and therefore confusing. Based on an analysis of these terms and their original use, the following system for their future use is recommended: the whole pattern of ridges and grooves on the enamel surface is termed perikymata or imbrications. Distinction between the two elements of the pattern is attained by adding ridge/crest or groove/furrow. Abstract –Three groups of female Wistar rats were intravenously injected with the antineoplastic drug doxorubicin in a single dose of 5 mg/kg, 10 mg/kg and 20 mg/kg, respectively. The animals were killed 1 and 5 days after injection. Paraffin and Vestopal W embedded sections were prepared of the maxillary right and left incisors, respectively, and evaluated by light microscopy. Doxorubicin produced necrosis of single cells, of small groups of cells in the basal pulp and destroyed the preodontoblasts as evaluated 1 day after injection. On the 5th day of observation, the late preodontoblasts and basal pulp had regenerated, but the early preodontoblast zone remained absent, leading to an abnormal odontogenesis. This caused a marked reduction of dentin deposition in the apical part of the tooth and production of irregular predentin by cells in the pulp and by the young odontoblast

Abstract –The pathogenicity of five black‐pigmented strains of Bacteroides was tested in subcutaneously implanted Teflon cages in guinea pigs. The tissue reaction around the cages was registered and the contents of the fluid of the cages were analyzed. Two strains of B. intermedius produced a localized abscess around the cages, while one strain (381) of B. gingivalis and an asaccharolytic strain (BN11a‐f) different from B. gingivalis did not induce any signs of abscess formation. One strain (W83) of B. gingivalis caused extensive purulent breakdown of the tissues. When the inoculum of strain VV83 contained more than 109 cells, the animals were killed. Strain W83 was the only strain that increased in number in the cage. The fluid of cages inoculated with strain W83 was also remarkably different from the fluid of cages inoculated with the other strains. The fluid had a high proteolytic activity. No C3 protein of complement and only traces of immunoglobulins could be detected in the fluid. Both strain W83 and strain 381 had a high proteolytic activity against whole guinea‐pig serum and when bacteria of these two strains were incubated with guinea‐pig serum for 24 h, almost all serum proteins, including the C3 protein, were degraded. These two strains might thus have similar capacity in perturbing the host defence when inoculated into the tissue cages. The actual difference in pathogenicity between the strains might be explained by a recent finding that the pathogenic strain W83, but not strain 381, requires complement in activating polymorphonuclear leukocytes. The degradation of the C3 protein by the pathogenic strain W83 of B. gingivalis thus may be the crucial event in its perturbation of the host defence. Abstract –This study was undertaken to determine the distribution and concentration of mineral in supragingival and subgingival dental calculus. Extracted incisors and premolars with attached dental calculus were used. After fixation the specimens were dehydrated and embedded in methylmethacrylate and 100‐μm‐thick ground sections were made. Microradiographs were produced and the mineral content in the sections was determined photometrically, using an aluminum step‐wedge as a reference system. The distribution of the mineral varied considerably within the specimens and between different specimens. Supragingival calculus appeared heterogeneous and often stratified, containing areas that seemed to be non‐calcified. The average mineral content was 37% by volume. By contrast subgingival calculus appeared homogeneously calcified, with an average mineral content of 58%. No differences in mineral content between surface areas and portions close to the tooth were seen. This indicates that once the calculus is formed no changes occur in the mineral content, i.e. no maturation occurs with age. Abstract –The level of IgA in saliva of pregnant and non‐pregnant women was measured. Stimulated whole saliva was collected from pregnant women. Also included was a group of menstruating women from whom saliva was collected in springtime as well as in autumn in each phase of the menstrual cycle. Abstract –The antibacterial effects of chlorhexidine and an oxygen releasing agent on the salivary microflora were evaluated in healthy subjects in two separate experiments: 1) mouthrinsing on a single occasion and 2) mouthrinsing two or four times a day for 1 wk. Both experiments were performed in a cross‐over study, and each subject was randomly tested for both rinsing agents and a saline control. The total bacterial number and some selected bacterial genera were followed in saliva samples taken prior to (zero‐samples) and on three occasions after the rinsing or rinsing period. The reduction of the total bacterial number by mouthrinsing two or four times a day for 1 wk with chlorhexidine was statistically significant and lasted for over 4 h. After rinsing with chlorhexidine on one single occasion the reduction of the microflora was statistically significant and of the same magnitude as after rinsing two or four times daily for 1 wk. Although statistically significant reduction was obtained, the significant biologic effect of antimicrobial agents may be questioned. The number of Strep, mutans was dramatically reduced with chlorhexidine in some subjects and this reduction lasted for over 1 wk. Abstract –The supernatant of centrifuged whole saliva was incubated with radiolabeled sucrose to measure polysaccharide production by cell free transferases and to examine whether water‐insoluble polysaccharides were produced. Amounts of polysaccharides were considered to reflect the level of cell free transferases in saliva. Plating samples on blood agar, MS and MSB plates gave salivary counts of total CFU, total streptococci, S. salivarius and S. mutans. The capability of the cell free portion of saliva to produce polymers was confirmed and it appeared that the cell free transferases were able to produce water‐insoluble polysaccharides. Significant correlations were found between the total and the insoluble polysaccharides from14C‐G’‐sucrose and total CFU, total streptococci, S. salivarius and S. mutans, respectively. Heavily S. mutans infected subjects seemed to produce particularly large amounts of water‐insoluble polysaccharides from14C‐G’‐sucrose. The apparently water‐insoluble14C‐F’‐polysaccharides correlated significantly to the number of S. salivarius. Abstract –The oral cavities of 200 consecutive psoriasis patients, most of them with widespread disease on the skin, were examined (man/woman ratio 1.63:1, mean age of the patients 43.7 yr). The average duration of the disease at time of examination was 15.8 yr. When questioned, 16% of the patients reported changes in the joints, which, according to them, had been verified by radiography. 72.5% of the patients reported on nail involvement at some time during their disease. Fissured tongue was present in 9.5% of the patients, and geographic tongue and smooth tongue each in 1 % of the patients. Angular cheilitis was found in 3.5% of the patients. In 20 out of 200 cases, the oral mucosa showed changes and biopsy was taken. Four out of 20 patients showed histologic features typical of psoriasis, including accumulations of leukocytes in the upper layers of the epithelium, all with widespread psoriasis skin involvement. Areas of oral mucosa were most often deep red in color, the buccal mucosa and tongue being the two most common sites. Abstract –The present electron microscopic study visualizes adherence of Treponema denticola, the most common treponeme of the gingival crevice in man, to human epithelial cells in vitro. The number of organisms adhering to the cells increased with increase in the treponemal concentration from 106cells/ml through 108cells/ml. Epithelial cells immediately after mitosis were particularly rich in treponemes. The number of adsorbing treponemes was reduced after pretreatment of the epithelial cells with hyaluronidase. The epithelial cells showed no predilection site of treponemal attachment. Treponemes attached preferably by their ends. Intracellularity of treponemes was not regularly attained. Abstract –The pattern of elevator activity during mastication in temporal and masseter muscles of 37 patients with functional disorders and pain in the masticatory system was studied before and after conventional treatment and compared with a control group of 43 subjects. As compared to controls, patients before treatment chewed with greater relative strength (percent of maximal elevator activity), longer relative contraction times (percent of total duration of chewing cycle) and stronger intermediary activity between strokes. These parameters of muscle coordination are proposed as quantitative estimates of “hyperactivity”. Conventional treatment abolished pain, tenderness and other symptoms and signs completely in 18 patients in whom the most significant findings in the muscles under study were reductions in absolute and relative contraction times ascribed to increased stability produced by occlusal adjustment. It is suggested that relatively shorter pauses before treatment impaired blood flow and that their prolongation following treatment improved circulation.
