摘要:
Chaplains usually assume that cost containment concerns are a negative influence on their ministry. We argue that they can be a positive opportunity to demonstrate cost efficiency. We describe here a pilot project that gathered data for two months from three university general hospital pastoral care departments concerning the number of pastoral contacts, the time used in these contacts, the quality of pastoral services delivered, and the costs involved. We create a model that integrates these diverse data into a“pastoral care index.”The cost per pastoral care contact ranged from $2.17 to $6.43. Further refinement and use of this model will promote the cause of hospital chaplaincy.

摘要:
In the healthcare reform environment it is imperative that chaplains redesign how pastoral care is conducted in ways that are more efficient and effective. One model is to screen patients to identify those who want or need pastoral care. Another model is using referrals from other healthcare staff. This article describes an attempt to combine these two models using volunteers and Basic Clinical Pastoral Education students. Under pressure of healthcare reform, healthcare providers and professionals are reassessing how they do their work. This is true of chaplaincy as well. This article is a preliminary report on one attempt at re-designing how pastoral care is conducted by a Department of Pastoral Services at a academic medical center in the East.

摘要:
This paper presents a model of pastoral care based on recognizing death not just as an event that ends life but as a presence interdependent with life. It proposes that we constantly respond to the presence of death in life by encountering it or escaping it. An encounter response teaches relationship-oriented caring. A case presentation demonstrates a way of doing pastoral care based on an encounter response to the presence of death.

摘要:
Prayer request journals are often placed in hospital chapels for patients, visitors and staff to write their needs and concerns. The author uses examples from these journals to show how these personal expressions resemble the lament of the psalmist. She draws on Dorothee Soelle's understanding of the importance of language in dealing with suffering and illustrates how the prayer journals provide a vehicle of uttering despair and pain, and hope and gratitude.
