The arguments of Edwards and Bell for periodical income measurement by use of the entry prices of closing assets are examined critically. Some of the grounds on which their conclusions rest are unobjectionable; but some crucial assumptions are untenable. The purchase prices of goods not yet acquired are necessary in making choices or decisions. But no case was, or can be, established for using entry prices for closing asset valuations in accounts or evaluations of past performance. All like systems fall under the same criticisms.

Allocations continue to be a cause of concern to accountants. Allocations may be distributional (i.e. allocation of resources through budgets) or metrical (e.g. overhead costs to departments). Cash flow accounting is often advocated because it avoids metrical allocations. However, the interaction effects of cash flows may nullify their claimed advantages.

The decision in GarnervMurray is regarded as the source of law in relation to the dissolution of a partnership where one partner is insolvent. There is evidence of some confusion regarding the treatment of any shortfall in the contributions required from the partners. The conventional treatment of that shortfall, as described in accounting textbooks, appears to be not in accord with the decision and to be at odds with a clearly stated point of law.
