摘要:
AbstractIn the aerospace sector of manufacturing industry it is essential, in the design of lightweight vehicles, to optimize the static and dynamic properties of even such components as fasteners. This requirement is also increasingly being sought in the automobile industry. Thus, novel designs, optimized production procedures, and specialized materials have to be used. Roll forming is one technique which has been applied successfully for the improvement of resistance to fatigue, and fretting fatigue of metallic fasteners, by virtue of the work hardening and smoothing of the surface which takes place. High and ultrahigh strength materials, in particular nickel, titanium, and ferrous·based alloys, are the principal materials to benefit from this technique.

摘要:
AbstractObservations are reported on the laser surface alloying of commercial purity (CP) Ti and Ti–6Al–4V alloy with carbon and of CP Ti and Ti–15 Mo alloy with nitrogen. Repeated laser melting of substrates precoated with Dag graphite was used for carbon alloying, while alloying with nitrogen was done by laser melting in a nitrogen flow. Structural studies included X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy. Both alloying procedures produce hardened surface layers up to∼650 HV using carbon and>∼1000 HV using nitrogen. This hardening resulted from the formation of TiC and TiN respectively, including primary dendritic carbide and nitride.

摘要:
AbstractSpecimens of pure iron, an iron-carbon (1 wt-%C) alloy, and steels Ck 45 and En 40B (=24CrMo13) were salt bath nitrocarburized. M etallographic examination was performed after Murakami etching. This etchant provides a sensitive discrimination between pure nitrides and carbon containing nitrides ( carbonitrides). Thus the two-phase (εandγ' ) constitution, as well as the carbon concentration profile within the compound layer, was revealed. Nitrogen, carbon, oxygen, and sulphur concentration profiles were quantitatively determined by electron microprobe analysis. Residual stress measurement and phase analysis were carried out by X-ray diffraction methods. Both macros trains (by analysis of line shift using the sin2Ψmethod) and microstrains (by analysis of line broadening using a Voigt single-line method) were determined. In view of a possible interaction between residual stresses in the compound layer and the diffusion zone, residual stresses were also determined in the diffusion zone beneath the compound layer. The results obtained provide a basis for a model to describe the constitution of the compound layer.

摘要:
AbstractA series of commercially available cemented carbides coated with single or composite layers of TiC, TiN, and Al2O3were used to cut three types of steel, En 8 (080M40), En9 (070M55), and En24 (817M40). For comparison, two uncoated cemented carbides and some Al2O3-ceramic inserts were also tested. The worn surfaces were examined using optical and scanning electron microscopy techniques and tool/work interfacial conditions were evaluated from 'quick stop' experiments and tool temperature estimates. By linking this information with observed wear rates, various rake and flank wear mechanisms are proposed.
