摘要:
Summary:One type of male figure on Attic Late Geometric vases has a rectangular rather than triangular torso. the general interpretation of this shape as a square shield is not valid, and it is already recognised that we have some examples which represent a bell‐corslet and a chiton. the warriors on the chariots in the main frieze of an amphora by the Anavysos painter in the British Museum appear to be wearing non‐metallic corslets. A review of extant material suggests we should be cautious in interpreting square‐bodies since artists availed themselves of the convention for a number of purposes. the extent of the use of non‐metallic corslets in the eighth and seventh centuries cannot be judged from this evidence, but its very use is a significant factor in the debate over the introduction of hoplite armour and tactics in Greek

摘要:
Summary:This paper examines the idea that in the Later Bronze Age a regular exchange network linked Crete to the Western Cyclades and assured them of preferential treatment. Comparison of the degree of Minoan influence on Keos, Melos and Thera with that on the other Cycladic islands confirms that the former group had a special relationship with Crete; but the evidence is insufficient to prove that they acted as secondary distribution centres for Minoan goods. the substantivist view is that in a non‐monetary economy exchange was effected through reciprocity and redistribution, while early trade was always motivated by imports, not exports. But documentary evidence for the Near East warns against oversimplification. For the Western Aegean, precise data are lacking, but evidence suggests that foreign trade was regulated by official agents; there was also freelance private enterprise. the Western Cyclades derived much of their prosperity from the transit due

摘要:
Summary:This paper considers the variations among artefact assemblages which developed between about 3000 and 2000 be and argues that they result from the existence of different spheres of exchange separated along hierarchical lines. the main discussion concerns the role of the Grooved Ware assemblage and its relationship with other late Neolithic traditions.

摘要:
Summary:Archaeological and documentary evidence for contact between north western France and central southern Britain in the first millennium BC is presented and discussed. the tin trade may well have been the principal motivation for contact until the late second century BC when, following the foundation of Provincia Gallia Transalpina, the Roman‐dominated wine trade appears to have itensified cross‐channel intercourse. the position of Armorican middlemen is considered and port sites such as Alet and Hengistbury are discussed. A Wessex Contact Zone is defined within which overseas trade and local industrial production were focused. the economic and social effects of these systems on other parts of Britain are briefly outli

摘要:
Summary:The results to date of a programme of research into the metallurgy of the Wilburton hoards of the British Late Bronze Age are described and some interpretations presented. Possible origins for the metal are discussed. the associated technical advances are discussed and an attempt is made to provide a realistic metallurgical context for the hoards.I would like to thank the British Museum, London; the National Museum of Wales, Cardiff; Cambridge Museum of Archaeology and Ethnography; Museum of London; Winchester City Museums; Somerset County Museum, Taunton; Dorset County Museum, Dorchester; Exeter City Museums; Plymouth City Museums; Royal Institution of Cornwall, Truro; Musée des Antiquités Nationales, St.‐Germain‐en‐Laye and Museum für Vor‐ und Frühgeschichte, West Berlin for permission to take samples for analysis.A special acknowledgement must be made to Miss E. Owles and the Moyses Hall Museum, Bury St. Edmunds for immense assistance given in the study of the Isleham hoard.I would also like to thank Mr. D. Britton, Mr. R. Bradley and Mr. S. Needham for several useful discussions, Mr. A. McKnight for photography and Dr. M. Leese, British Museum Research Laboratory, for statistical calculations. Mr. A. McKnight for photography, Dr. M.
