SUMMARYMice, anaesthetized with pentobarbital, were kept at normal body temperature or cooled to 21‐22°C. The capillary circulation was studied in the conjunctiva. The oedema produced by subcutaneous injection of turpentine was estimated by the trypan blue technique.Intravenous injection of 3 mg/kg trypan blue caused haemoconcentration in hypothermic but not in normothermic mice. In a dose of 1.5 mg/kg, trypan blue did not cause changes in haematocrit, and therefore this dose was used for the estimation of turpentine oedema.In normothermic mice under light anaesthesia vasoconstriction with an ischaemic capillary bed was usually observed in the conjunctiva. With increasing depth of anaesthesia vasodilatation and hyperaemia occurred with increasing frequency. In hypothermic mice a similar relation between depth of anaesthesia and changes in microcirculation was found, although there was a relative tendency to vasodilatation. Trypan blue increased the tendency to vasodilatation under hypothermia, but not at normal body temperature.In both normothermic and hypothermic mice the formation of turpentine oedema was found to be inversely related to the depth of anaesthesia. In hypothermic mice under light anaesthesia the oedema formation was less than in normothermic mice under light anaesthesia.ZUSAMMENFASSUNGMit Pentobarbital narkotisierte Mäuse wurden entweder bei normaler Körpertemperatur gehalten oder auf 21‐22%dGC unterkühlt. Dabei wurde der Kapillarkreislauf in der Konjunktiva untersucht. Ferner wurde eine Schätzung des durch subcutane Terpentininjektion erzeugten Ödems mit Hilfe der Trypanblaumethode vorgenommen.Die i.v. Injektion von 3 mg/kg Trypanblau führte zu Hämokonzentration bei den hypothermen, nicht aber bei den normothermen Mäusen. Eine Dosis von 1.5 mg/kg Trypanblau hatte keine Änderung des Hämatokrits zur Folge, weshalb diese Dosierung zur Bestimmung des Terpentinödems verwendet wurde.Bei den normothermen Mäusen war unter oberflächlicher Narkose eine Vasokontriktion mit ischämischem Kapillarbett in der Konjunktiva die Regel. Bei zunehmender Narkosetiefe trat in vermehrtem Masse Vasodilatation und Hyperämie auf. Bei den hypothermen Mäusen fand sich ein ähnliches Verhältnis zwischen der Narkosetiefe und den Veränderungen der Mikrozirkulation. Es bestand jedoch eine relative Tendenz zur Vasodilatation. SUMMARYThe increase in permeability of human erythrocytes to glucose produced by carbon dioxide was confirmed. The effect of certain membrane inhibitors was studied. It was found that while mercuric chloride inhibited the effect of carbon dioxide, ouabain and butanol did not. Inhalation anesthetics in therapeutic concentrations were found to inhibit the stimulatory effect of carbon dioxide. It was concluded that while the means by which carbon dioxide stimulates glucose entry into red cells remains undefined, the inhibitory effect of anesthetics is not related to their ability to “stabilize” membranes, to their effects on energy‐linked metabolic processes, or to their interactions with sulfhydryl or amino groups in cell membranes. The inhibitory effect of anesthetics on carbon dioxide‐stimulated glucose entry is compatible with the hypothesis that they act as competitive penetrating inhibitors of glucose transport mechanisms in human red cell membranes. The depressant effect of anesthetics on carbon dioxide‐induced increases in respiration resemble their depressant effects on carbon dioxide‐induced increases in glucose transport. This raises the possibility that anesthetics have as a common property inhibition of normal responses to carbon dioxide, including responses other than those involving pulmonary

SUMMARYThe potential uses of a compact, light, battery‐operated nerve stimulator are presented. It can be used in the operating room as a clinical device, as a teaching aid and for purposes of investigation. The nerve stimulator is a useful monitor for the continuous control of muscle relaxation during surgical procedures. It provides a reliable and harmless way of titrating the need for skeletal muscle relaxant and gives valuable information on the effects of anesthetic drugs and techniques on abdominal relaxation. It is particularly useful at the end of surgery when inadequate ventilation is present. It allows the rapid and precise differentiation between central and peripheral types of apnea. Finally, it determines the type of neuromuscular block and evaluates the reversal of the block by anticholinesterase agents. The nerve stimulator has a definite place among the standard monitoring equipment of the clinical anesthesiologist.ZUSAMMENFASSUNGEs wird über die Anwendungsmöglichkeiten eines tragbaren, leichten, batteriegespeisten Nervstimulators berichtet. Er kann im Operationssaal als klinisches Hilfsmittel, als Lehrbehelf und für Forschungszwecke verwendet werden. Der Nervstimulator ist ein brauchbares Überwachungsgerät für die kontinuerliche Kontrolle der Muskelerschlaffung während operative Eingriffe. Er gestattet die verlässliche und harmlose Titrierung der erforderlichen Mengen von Muskelrelaxantien und gibt wertwolle Informationen über die Wirkung der Agentien und Techniken der Narkose auf die Bauchdeckenentspannung. Besonders nützlich ist das Gerät am Ende der Operation beim Vorliegen inadäquater Ventilation. Es gestattet die rasche und genaue Differenzierung zwischen zentraler und peripherer Atemlähmung. SUMMARYAn account is given of the influence of enibomalum anaesthesia on the condition of infants delivered by Caesarean section. Study groups of 217 acute and 44 non‐acute cases are compared with a similar number of controls. The condition of the infants was assessed by estimating the Apgar score 1 minute after birth and by measuring the time taken before normal respiration became established.It is concluded that a dose of 250 mg or less of enibomalum lowers the infant's Apgar score and delays the onset of normal respiration. It does not influence the mortality during the first week of life. The Apgar score would appear to be a less useful prognostic indicator when enibomalum had been administered to the mother than when it had not been given.ZUSAMMENFASSUNGEs wird ein Bericht über den Einfluss der Enibomalanaesthesie auf den Zustand von Säuglingen gegeben, die mittels Kaiserschnitt entbunden wurden. Untersuchungsgruppen von 217 akuten und 44 nicht‐akuten Fällen werden mit einer ähnlichen Zahl von Kontrollen verglichen. Die Bewertung des Zustandes der Neugeborenen erfolgte mit Hilfe des Apgar‐Schemas eine Minute nach der Geburt und mittels Messung der Zeit bis zum Einsetzen normaler Atmung.Die Autoren kommen zu dem Schluss, dass eine Dosis von 250 mg oder weniger von Enibomal sowohl die Apgar‐Bewertungszahl des Säuglings herabsetzt, als auch das Einsetzen der normalen Atmung verzögert. Die Mortalität während der ersten Lebenswoche bleibt unbeeinflusst.
