To avoid the constant exposure of anaesthesia and surgery personnel to gaseous anaesthetics, it is thought that in the future the excess and expiration gas from the anaesthetic apparatus can be drawn off via a tube connection. Should the anaesthetic apparatus be completely tight this measure would probably be sufficient. If, however, the apparatus is not tight a certain volume of gas would escape through the leakages and thereby not lend itself to being drawn off.This investigation, which includes 60 anaesthetic units with a total of 95 circle systems plus 20 brand new units with matching circle systems, showed that none of the daily used apparatuses were completely tight. Under the pressure increases which arise in the apparatus under controlled respiration, the gas loss through leakage was 7‐87% of the total excess, which is nearly equal to the supply of fresh gas which normally is 4 1/min. In comparison with this, new apparatuses showed a gas loss of 2.5% of the excess gas (the gas supply).All of the conical connections and 60% of the respiration bags were leaking, the biggest leakage being at the junction of the y‐piece and the catheter connector. By exchanging the normal metal y‐piece with a plastic y‐piece a reduction of approximately 75% of the total gas loss was achieved, and by a few further minor changes the gas loss was reduced to 3% of the total excess.On the basis of these investigations a few measures to avoid the leakage are suggested together with a method for routine tightness control. It is concluded that only a tight apparatus gives the possibility of complete removal of the excess and expiration gas from the inhalatory zone of the personnel.ZUSAMMENFASSUNGUm zu verhüten, daß das Operationssaalpersonal ständig dem Einfluß gasförmiger Narkosemittel ausgesetzt bleibt, ist in Zukunft daran gedacht, die überschüssigen und ausangeatmeten Gase mittels Schlauchverbindungen von den Narkoseapparaten abzusaugen. Diese Maßnahme würde wahrscheinlich ausreichen, wenn die Narkoseapparate völlig dicht wären. Sollten die Apparate jedoch undicht sein, dann würde ein gewisses Gasvolumen durch die lecken Stellen entweichen und somit nicht abgesaugt werden können.Diese Untersuchung, 60 Narkosegeräte mit insgesamt 95 Kreissystemen, sowie 20 brandneue Geräte und dazugehörige Kreissysteme umfassend, zeigte, daß keiner der im täglichen Gebrauch steh‐enden Apparate völlig dicht war. Unter dem Druckanstieg, der während kontrollierter Beatmung in Apparat entsteht, betrug der Gasverlust durch Lecks 7–87 % des Gesamtüberschusses, der nahezu der Zufuhr von Frischgas — normalerweise 4 1/min — entspricht. Im Vergleich dazu zeigten neue Apparate einen Gasverlust von nur 2,5 % des über‐schußgases (der Gaszufuhr).Aile konischen Verbindungsstücke und 60 % der Atembeutel waren undicht, wobei sich die größte Leckstelle an der Verbindung zwischen dem Ypsilonstück und dem Tubusansatzstück fand. Durch Austauschen des normalen Metall‐Y‐Stückes gegen ein Plastik‐Y‐Stüiick konnte eine Herabsetzung des Gasverlustes um ungefähr 75 % erreicht werden, und durch einige weitere kleinere Veränderungen wurde schließlich der Gasverlust auf 3 % des gesamten überschusses vermindert.Auf Grund dieser Untersuchungen werden einige Maßnahmen zur Verhütung von Undichtigkeiten und eine Methode der Routinekontrolle auf Dichtheit vorgeschlagen. SUMMARYIn an attempt to clarify an issue rendered equally confusing by over‐enthusiasm on the one hand and a legacy of negative bias on the other, the author undertook to evaluate the respirogenic acitvity in man of the newer stimulants doxapram, ethamivan, methylphenida‐te, prethcamide, dimefline, and benzquinami‐de, and to compare this activity with that of the older “classical” agents caffeine, bemegri‐de, alpha‐lobeline, aminophylline, coramine, and pentylenetetrazol, as well as with a placebo, normal saline. The results of this study show that doxapram is by far the most potent and selectively respirogenic of all twelve of the active agents studied, and at the same time, that this drug alone was virtually free from side effects, the incidence of these being less than that seen with the placebo. The hyperventilation occurring during induction of Epontol® (propanidid) anaesthesia is experimentally analyzed in the cat. The investigation shows that the Epontol solvent is not involved and vagotomy does not prevent the hyperventilation. Blocking the carotid sinuses abolishes the hyperventilation, which seems to be of the same origin as that after injection of lobeline and sodium cyanide. The hyperventilation is thus due to a pharmacological effect on the carotid sinus of the active substance in Epontol.ZUSAMMENFASSUNGDie bei der Narkoseeinleitung mit Epontol auftretende Hyperventilation wurde an Katzen experimentell analysiert. Die Untersuchung zeigte, daß das Epontol‐Lösungsmittel keinen Einfluß hat und daß Vagotomie die Hyperventilation nicht verhütet. Blockade des Carotis‐Sinus löscht jedoch die Hyperventilation aus, die anscheinend auf die gleiche Weise zustande kommt wie durch die Injektion von Lobelin und Natriumzyanid.
