AbstractDiscrimination ellipsoids were constructed in the (x, y,Y) space for six colors so: achromatic, red, yellow, green, blue, and brown. the colors were presented on the surround, either dark (aperture color mode) or bright (simulated surface color mode). Ellipsoids were defined by two methods: matching and paired comparison (an extended form of the method of constant stimuli). Hence, four ellipsoids were obtained with soby each of two observers. For simulated surface colors, except for the yellow color, the two methods gave almost the same ellipsoids. Ellipsoids defined by the fluctuation of matches were almost the same for both aperture and simulated surface colors. Those ellipsoids are similar on the chromaticity diagram to ellipses estimated through MacAdam's colormetric coefficients g's. Paired comparisons were more difficult for aperture colors than for simulated surface colors in the sense that the ellipsoids were larger in size. However, the rates of false discrimination for identical pairs (so, so) were higher for surface colors. In spite of the drastic change of appearance of the brown color, no change was observed between the two modes of appearance for ellipsoids obtained by either method. the study is methodological and detailed statistical analyses of the two data processings are included, one based on matchings and the other based on paired comparisons.

AbstractPrincipal component analysis was applied to spectral luminous efficiencies determined by the heterochromatic brightness matching by 51 and 70 observers for the field size. 2° and 10°, respectively, which were used to derive the CIE Vb,2(Λ) and Vb,10(Λ). Four principal components were found to explain the individual variation. the two deviation indices were introduced by slightly modifying the first and second principal scores and they were effectively used to specify individual variations and to predict the spectral luminous efficiency curve. Equations were derived to predict these two deviation indices as functions of luminous efficiencies at two wavelengths, 460 and 640 nm in the case of 2° field and 470 and 630 mm in 10° field. the luminous efficiency curves thus predicted by the two deviation indices fitted very nicely to the experimentally determined luminous efficiency curves of all the observers. AbstractWe describe an experiment to visually quantify the accuracy of the simulation of the color and color‐difference of surface samples on a CRT display unit. A gray‐scale‐anchored, magnitude‐estimation experiment was performed to assess the absolute quality of the simulations and a forced‐choice, paired‐comparisons experiment was performed to assess the relative quality of the simulations. Results indicate that an average color difference for overall simulation accuracy can be under 3.0 CIELAB color‐difference units for highcolor‐temperature sources, and slightly worse for low‐colortemperature sources. AbstractRelations between music and color have long been debated, it seems inconclusively. I describe the theory behind three electronic sound‐to‐light transducers built to give a visual impression of music to students and deaf people. In psychophysical theory, any psychological correlation between music and color must derive primarily from the physical stimuli, which, as sonic or radiant energy, have only two variables: (a) amplitude, causing loudness or brightness/lightness: and (b) wavelength, causing musical tone or hue.
