AbstractIn the present study, the critical durations for temporal integration at theshold were obtained for bichromatically mixed (red/green and yellow/blue) test lights presented against darkness and achromatic backgrounds of different intensities. Critical durations crucially depended on the mixing ratio of the red and green components: it was shortest when red and green components were balanced in intensity canceling chromaticness of both components, and longer for red and green monochromatic lights. This trend was pronounced with backgrounds of higher intensities but was not obvious with dim backgrounds. The results of yellow/blue condition showed that critical durations were shorter when yellow component was dominant, as well as when yellow and blue components were balanced in intensity canceling chromaticness of both components, but when blue monochromatic light was dominant, it was longer than in other mixture conditions and changed less with the elevation of the background intensity. AbstractTwo matameric stimuli with identical tristimulus values must have spectral radiance distributions that cross at least three times. Many studies have shown that the crossover locations of three‐crossover metamers tend to occur in certain defined regions. This finding has led to hypotheses concerning fundamental aspects of the visual system. In the current article, calculations are reported that prove that crossover locations depend on the spectral properties of the metameric stimuli. For object colors, the spectral properties are determined by colorant obsorption bandwidths. Depending on the absorption bandwidth, crossovers can occur in nearly any region of the visible spectrum. AbstractThe Munsell color system is investigated as a structure in fundamental color space. The entire collection of samples from the 1929 Munsell Book of Color is mapped into fundamental color space and surfaces of constant hue, value, and chroma are identified. An algorithm, based on these surfaces, is presented for estimating the Munsell specification of an arbitrary reflectance curve.

AbstractColor image quantization is a process of representing an image with a small number of well selected colors. In this article an algorithm for multidimensional data clustering (termed the variance‐based algorithm), based on the criterion of minimization of the sum‐of‐squared error, is applied to the problem of reducing the number of colors used to represent a given color image. The suitability of the sum‐of‐squared error criterion for measuring the similarity between the original and quantized images is examined using a digitized image and a computer‐generated image. The experimental results indicate that this error measure is basically consistent with the perceived quality of the quantized image. The performance of the variance‐based algorithm is compared with that of other algorithms for color image quantization in terms of quantization images generated using the colors selected by the variance‐based and the mediancut algorithms are

AbstractThis note describes how colors of some familiar objects and scenes shift when viewed with one of the author's eyes after a lens implant compared to the other eye without implant. Estimates of the shifts are described with common color names. Some shifts were found to be spectacular! Variations in the spectral transmission of the lens is believed to explain the shifts. Implications affecting the choice of clors for interiors, fashions, and other design uses are discussed. An appendix contains data on matches on the Glenn and D&H Color Rules.
