摘要:
The paper is a tutorial review of program generators applied to simulation model building. A program generator is a tool to aid in the production of computer-coded representations of a logical model. A simple model introduces one generator, DRAFT. The application of the tool to a large engineering project is then used to highlight practical advantages and problems. The implications of the underlying network structure are considered. The presentation of development work illustrates the extent to which such modeling software can be extended. These extensions will support the model users in all aspects of decison making.

摘要:
The representation of simulation models, especially those expressed in discrete event languages, by means of system-theoretic formalism is reviewed. The important concepts of decomposition, static and dynamic structure, and state variable selection are explained and their implications for the design of simulation software explored. The system-theoretic approach is compared with other approaches to model representation derived from general software development methodology. Both simulation software design and systems theory may benefit by the challenges each raises for the other.

摘要:
Industrial engineering as an academic discipline appears to have reached a crisis. While the typical industrial engineering curriculum based on the Roy report results in graduate engineers who are valued by many employers, it has proved to have some adverse implications. Industrial engineering departments have not been able to maintain cohesiveness and a common view of their discipline and the engineering content has been at too low a level to put industrial engineers at the forefront of technological development. The problems and some possible solutions are described; however, this paper is primarily intended to identify some of the key issues that need to be discussed.

A simultaneous equation model is constructed in order to describe the health services delivery system serving the state of Indiana. The model consists of a set of stochastic equations that describe the joint dependency of physician manpower and short-term general hospital beds on social, demographic, and economic characteristics of the population served. The model is validated with county data from Indiana and the dynamic behavior of the health services delivery system that results from feedback in the model, and the inclusion of lagged physician manpower variables is analyzed.

Two general purpose integer programming algorithms, one a fractional cutting-plane algorithm and the other a branch-and-bound algorithm, were investigated. The cutting-plane algorithm easily solves an important class of integer problems, a class of scheduling problems for the assigning of personnel to work shifts over a fixed period of time. Scheduling problems were constructed with 14 to 189 integer variables and with 14 to 21 constraints. The general branch-and-bound search was not effective on this class of scheduling problems, but it was effective on the classical test problems found in the literature of integer programming, many of which were not handled by the cutting-plane algorithm.

We consider a central facility location problem with the ring-radial distance measure. We develop an O(n2) algorithm for the one-median problem, where n is the number of existing facilities. We also develop a heuristic procedure for the unweighted p-median location problem.

摘要:
A generalization of Wagner's dynamic programming model for the replacement economy decision problem is presented. The model, illustrated by numerical examples, classifies relevant cash flows into three components: capital transfers, operating disbursements, and operating revenues. Conceptually, this model could be extended easily to an arbitrary number of component cash flows. Multiple alternative challengers to a current defender are considered, and each component cash flow of each challenger can vary independently according to the time of acquisition; thus differential inflation and prospective technological changes could be dealt with easily. A PASCAL implementation of the model, included as an appendix, was used to identify prospectively optimal sequences of assets in three numerical examples.

A selection methodology is presented for evaluating and selecting a microcomputer for implementing computerized process control and data acquisition systems. The approach is based on establishing priorities that reflect the relative importance of the relevant factors in the system design. Resolution steps include the identification of major system tasks, definition of basic functional concerns with their system descriptors, and comparative evaluation of the candidate microcomputers. A detailed case study illustrates the application of the methodology in the context of energy management.

This paper is concerned with the problem of maintaining order due dates in job shops that manufacture products to replenish a finished goods inventory controlled by an order point system. Two different strategies for maintaining order due dates—static and dynamic due date procedures—are analyzed using both shop and inventory system performance measures. This study examines the influence of the degree of predictability of the final product demand pattern on the performance of the static and dynamic procedures. The demand pattern for individual products is characterized by a long-run demand rate, a period-to-period serial correlation coefficient of demand, and a coefficient of demand variation. The results indicate that the dynamic due-date procedure does not provide a significant improvement in the performance of the production system in comparison with the static procedure - even when the predictability of the demand during the replenishment lead time is improved.
