AbstractA local event which occurs after damage of a blood vessel can be the start of cellular cholesterol ester accumulation. Thrombocytes and macrophages will adhere to the endothelial wall. Subsequently lipoproteins and macrophages permeate this endothelial wall. The perivascularly arranged macrophages will internalize the “modified lipoproteins” and eventually cholesterol ester accumulation will take place. This cholesterol ester accumulation can also occur in smooth muscle cells. The reversibility of the accumulation depends on the lipoprotein levels and on the physico‐chemical characteristics of the accumulated cholesterol (esters). AbstractThis study describes a serine proteinase which degrades high molecular weight polypeptides of keratins. The enzyme was coextracted with 8M urea together with keratins and separated from the keratins by gel filtration chromatography. Molecular weight of the enzyme was estimated at 25,000 daltons by gel filtration. Revealed characteristics of the enzyme were as follows; 1) maximally active at pH 8.5–9.0, 2) requires 0.04% SDS for maximum activity, 3) heat stable in the absence of SDS up to 65°C for 2 min, 4) sensitive against serine protease inhibitor, phenylmethanesulfonyl fluoride and soybean trypsin inhibitor, 5) highly specific for natural protein substrates, such as keratin polypeptid

AbstractThe influence of selenium dioxide on thein vitroandin vivogrowth of transplantable B16 melanoma was studied. In thein vivostudy, melanoma tissues showed a decrease in development of tumor growth and a tendency toward higher levels of free radical signal (ESR). Cultured B16 melanoma cells revealed a marked disturbance of cell growth especially in the solution with a high dose of selenium.These results may indicate that selenium has an antitumorigenic effect on B16 melanoma cells.

AbstractHepatitis B virus (HBV) infection was studied in 100 patients with porphyria cutanea tarda (PCT). The overall prevalence of HBV serologic markers was 57%: 6 patients had HBsAg, 9 had antiHBc alone, 2 had antiHBc associated with antiHBe and the remaining 40 patients had antiHBs.The seropositivity frequency was significantly related to the age of patients and to previous venesection treatment but was unrelated to previous hepatitis or risk factors, amount of alcohol consumption, abnormalities of serum iron levels, liver function tests, or hepatosiderosis.Seropositive patients showed more severe histological abnormalities than seronegative patients.Our results indicate that PCT should be considered a high risk disorder for HBV infection and that this agent may play an important role in aggravating the underlying liver damage.

AbstractYucatan mini‐pig skin (Mexican hairless pig) is described as a good animal model for comparative investigations with human skin. We report the reactivity patterns of monoclonal antibodies (MCA) on both mini‐pig and human skin. Of 21 MCA reacting with various human skin antigens, only six were negative with mini‐pig skin.Using indirect immunofluorescence test, MCA specific for cytoplasmic or membrane antigens of human keratinocytes (glycoproteins, cytokeratins, desmosomes) gave the same reactivity patterns on mini‐pig skin in the epidermis.In the dermis and at the dermal‐epidermal junction, most MCA decorated the same structures on both substrates (laminin, oxytalan fibers, neurofilaments, fibroblasts). However, some of them did not stain the same cellular structures.As expected, MCA specific for HLA antigens did not show any reactivity with mini‐pig skin.These MCA offer new tools for comparative investigations in various fields of experimental

AbstractThe major histocompatibility complex (MHC) control of T cell‐mediated response to drug‐derived determinants is not well understood. As a first step in studying the MHC control of drug hypersensitivity, semisynthetic penicillin, sulbenicillin (SBPC), was used as an antigen to establish anin vitroproliferative assay for mouse T cell response to this drug. The lymph node cells taken 7–9 days after immunization with 10 mg SBPC in complete adjuvant were tested for SBPC‐specific response in a standard 3 day proliferation assay. SBPC‐induced proliferation of the primed lymph node cells was mediated by the Thy‐1+, Lyt‐1+2–cells,i.e., helper type T (Th) cells. The Lyt‐1+2–, T cell proliferative responsiveness to SBPC was mapped on the I‐A locus within the H‐2 MHC regions. The proliferation was inhibited by the monoclonal antibody against Aβmolecules, product of the I‐A locus, but not by the monoclonal antibody against Eαmolecules, product of the I‐E locus. These results indicate that the SBPC response of Lyt‐1+2–, Th cells is controlled by the I‐A locus, the products of which, the MHC class II A (AβAα) molecules, function as restriction molecules in the Th cell recognition of SBPC.The removal of the Lyt‐2+suppressor type T (Ts) subset from the SBPC nonresponder cultures by a positive Lyt‐separation did not reverse the I‐A allele‐related nonresponsiveness. This result suggests that the nonresponsiveness is not due to the presence of the Lyt‐2+Ts subset, but rather to the absence of the Lyt‐1+Th subset, which recognizes SBPC together with self A molecules on the antigen presenting cell a

AbstractA 51‐year‐old gardener developed malignant hemangioendothelioma in a lesion of discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE) after repeated occurrence of squamous cell carcinoma and keratoacanthoma. The hemangioendothelioma arose in the same DLE lesion where squamous cell carcinoma had appeared. AbstractA case of dyskeratosis congenita has been documented for the first time in an Indian patient. It began soon after birth with the formation of bullae at traumatic sites, masquerading as epidermolysis bullosa. Nail changes and pigmentary changes appeared simultaneously at the age of 4 years. This seems to be the seventh reported case resulting from a fourth consanguineous marriage.
