摘要:
In this plenary address a therapist talks about her experiences of culture, gender, the loss of her daughter, and the impact this has had on her values and beliefs which are reflected in both her personal and professional life. Her paper challenges dominant discourses and the tyranny of expert knowledge.

摘要:
As in the arts and humanities and other social sciences, post‐modernism is quickly gaining orthodoxy in family therapy. This paper presents a social‐realist and deconstructive critique of recent post‐modern thought in family therapy. From the perspective of the French philosopher Jacques Derrida, it suggests that family therapy is neither modernnorpost‐modern, butboth/andthese alternatives, that is, para‐modern. In deconstructive thought, philosophical dualities like realism/social constructionism, cybernetic/post‐cybernetic, systemic/narrative co‐exist in an absurd double logic. Like writers of literature, thepara‐modern family therapy ‘puts forward’ a theory or method not as an ideology of truth, but as a play of irony. She/he works simultaneously inside and outside family therapy discourse, open to a wide range of i

摘要:
The metaphors that dominate the different models of family therapy carry with them unstated and sometimes unexamined theoretical assumptions about the therapeutic process. Following Richard Rorty's views of education, I contend that ironic metaphors can be used to expose some of these deep‐rooted assumptions behind the theory and practice of trainee professionals. I discuss the singular power of ironic metaphors to draw attention to the theoretical tensions in models of professional practice, and follow this with a description of an experiment with ironic trainin

摘要:
Different styles of practice in family therapy are increasingly distinguished by reference to theory originating from such fields as literary theory, literary criticism, philosophy, politics, art, sociology, linguistics and anthropology. The knowledge base of family therapy only minimally overlaps with these fields. Given that much of this theorising is concerned with undermining hierarchy and authority, it is an irony that much of it is itself intimidating and inviting of conformity with its own prescriptions.Family therapy theorizing is very susceptible to the influence of the latest fashions in thinking, and it is often the more outrageous, shocking and provocative ideas which win attention. In this article it is argued that it is possible to accept the challenges posed by constructivist/post‐modernist thinking without having to give up valuable middle groun

摘要:
This paper reports on a case in which family therapy was one of the approaches attempting to resolve an eating disorder in the second‐born of twins, the youngest in an intact family of four children. The case is described in its referral, agency and chronological contexts. The initial referral suggested that there was no physical cause for the presenting problem, and advocated an investigation of family dynamics. Some evidence which seemed to support the dysfunctional family formulation was provided, and various hypotheses regarding family disturbance were pursued in therapy. These hypotheses were, on the surface, supported by systemic observations. When a rare pancreatic tumour which was underlying the eating disorder was diagnosed many months after the brief and unsuccessful interventions, ‘confirmation bias’, resistance and neutrality became important issues for the therapists to consider. The role of these processes in this case is disc
