摘要:
In this year, the Australian bicentennial, a review of the Australian family is timely. Families — their structure, duration and function — change in response to their environmental context. Aboriginal families were uniquely adapted to their environment, and while first European colonisation was not intended as family settlement, families soon became established. In 1888, the conventional nuclear family was clearly in evidence as a response to an industrialising society. Changes are evident in the family of the 1980s, changes which have implications as this country looks forward to its third cent

摘要:
We do not relate to the world as such but through the interpretation of our perceptions and of our experience of the world. In this paper the work of Maturana, von Foerster, Bateson and Prigogine is examined from a biological and systems theory perspective, to provide support for the thesis that our knowledge of the world is a construction by an observer. Some conclusions relevant to therapy, as an outcome of the constructivist position, are also examined.

摘要:
When people are admitted to a psychiatric hospital they are degraded in status by the admission process — a ceremony supported by structures built into the hospital/treatment system. This paper explores some aspects of this process and proposes systemic group work as one way of redressing the balance for process. Regrading of status begins when patients discover the important contribution they have made to their own recovery. The development and application of systemic group work is traced, and Jantsch's concept of co‐evolution is invoked as one useful way of understanding the process. Co‐evolutionary ideas are also important in understanding the processes which occur in the context of the hospital ward and the wider systems into which influence ex

摘要:
Defended custodies are usually seen as the hardest type of family dispute for which the conciliation method of dispute resolution is available. Family mediators assess custody disputes of ex‐nuptial children among de facto couples, as the least likely to have a successful outcome. Custody disputes about ex‐nuptial children between mothers and their mothers constitute a particular subgroup of these and may be viewed as symptomatic of an adolescent/parental dispute rather than an actual custody dispute. This paper describes the psychosocial correlates of teenage mothers and the context in which the pregnancies develop, as well as the demographic and social characteristics of a minority of young mothers who engaged in custody disputes with their own mothers. Stierlin's conceptual framework is presented as a way of considering the dynamics of these families. The writer, based on her experiences with this subgroup of mothers, outlines the point at which conciliation might be appropriately offered, describes the process of mediation and its stages and suggests a suitable format. Necessary guidelines for the conduct of the sessions, techniques for engaging these families, pitfalls and potential problems are highlighted and examples from actual cases gi

摘要:
The writer describes an experience of working with rural Maoriwhameregroups in the far north of New Zealand. It is suggested that therapists in such a context can choose to suspend their judgement and work in the existing cultural milieu. A case study is presented to illustrate the discussion.
