摘要:
In this paper we propose a framework for the management of the complexity involved in building material flow system models. The object-orientated paradigm is applied as a tool to break down the material flow system model, as well as the design environment, into modules. The designer is provided with a generic material flow system model from which to start with the design process. The model is built, evaluated and improved using a collection of software applications that have been developed to address partial problems in the material flow system design process. The organization of design data and design tools into logical units clearly establishes precedence between software and data. This feature opens up possibilities for computer-assisted design tool sequencing.

摘要:
Tolerance charts have been used as an effective tool to ensure that a specific processing sequence is appropriate for a product of the required dimensions. Different arrangements of manufacturing tolerances and amount of stocks to be removed at each machining operation result in different production costs. Instead of existing heuristic, experience-based methods, this paper presents a new approach by means of which process tolerances and stock removals are simultaneously allocated through an optimization program, In approaching the optimal design, a cost function, the value of which varies with design variables (process tolerance and stock removal at individual cuts), is chosen as the objective to be minimized. During the searching process, the variables are subject to the constraints derived from dimension chains associated with a tolerance chart.

摘要:
Recently, there has been a lot of interest in the economics of quality control among researchers. The literature is rich in papers that address the determination of the optimum mean and control limits for a single machine with (and without) 100% inspection. However, it seems that the problem of analysing two machines in series (which has applications in electronics industries, and copper rolling amongst others) has not been addressed. Here we develop an algorithm for finding optimum target values for the two machines when a sampling plan is used. We also give numerical examples.

摘要:
The performance of cellular manufacturing systems is intrinsically sensitive to demand variations and machine breakdowns. A cell formation methodology that addresses, during the shop design stage, system robustness with respect to product demand variation is proposed. The system resources are aggregated into cells in a manner that minimizes the expected inter-cell material handling cost. The statistical characteristics of the independent demand and the capacity of the system resources are explicitly considered. In the first step of the proposed approach the expected value of the feasible production volumes, which respect resource capacities, are determined. Subsequently, the shop partition that results in near optimal inter-cell part traffic is found. The applicability of the proposed approach is illustrated through a comprehensive example.

摘要:
This paper focuses on the requirements for achieving automated diagnosis and error recovery in a robotic assembly cell, Untended robust operation is the goal which is discussed, and the use of a knowledge-base oriented diagnostic/control system to support on-line error recovery is advocated. It is proposed that error recovery attempts should be made, not only based on information gathered by system sensors, but also by using additional cell-specific knowledge pertaining to recovery strategies. Recovery attempts are to be made even in the absence of complete diagnosis, in order to gather additional information, A control structure developed to implement this approach is presented.

摘要:
It is often more economical to classify a continuous quality characteristic into several groups than it is to measure it exactly. We propose a control chart based on gauging theoretically continuous observations into multiple groups. This chart is designed to detect one-directional shifts in the mean of a normal distribution with specified operating characteristics. We show how to minimize the sample size required by optimizing the criteria used to group the quality characteristic. Control charts based on grouped observations may be superior to standard control charts based on variables when the quality characteristic is difficult or expensive to measure precisely but economical to gauge.

摘要:
The production literature has focused on the problem of setting the number of kanbans to achieve a given performance level. However, in practice, station supervisors are given the authority to set kanban numbers and the management problem is to determine the minimum performance level required of each station to obtain a desired line production rate. This paper shows how to find the minimum performance levels necessary to guarantee production rates independently of the average station processing times used.

摘要:
This paper describes an efficient method of packing boxes into a container using a unique spatial representation technique. Unlike other algorithms, the packing algorithm in this paper is not constrained by the physical packing sequence, that is, back to front, or bottom to top. This extra flexibility allows the program to pack the boxes more efficiently. The packing plan can be generated to suit the actual packing sequence. The program is implemented on an IBM PC and a comparison has been made with a similar software. The results, in terms of packing efficiency and packing time, are promising.

摘要:
In this paper, a heuristic for machine cell-part family identification that addresses some important design constraints—machine capacity, safety, technological requirements, upper limit on the size of a cell and number of cells—is presented. First, a model is used to determine the number of each type of machine necessary to process the parts. The heuristic then identifies a machine cell and corresponding part family. Next, it ascertains whether the design constraints listed above are satisfied, one by one. If not, it attempts to modify the original machine cell-part family combination by adding, removing or duplicating particular machines so that the design constraints are satisfied. Constraints of higher priority take precedence over those of lower priority. Similarly, other machine cell-part family combinations are identified. While generating a solution, the heuristic attempts to minimize the intercellular movement of parts as much as possible.

摘要:
This paper presents a construction model for facility layout. An artificial intelligence technique has been used to solve the problems of allocating patterns within a layout. The designed system consists of pattern allocation, a heuristic search and a knowledge base system. The system first generates alternative layouts by using a pattern allocation. The heuristic search searches for the best layout from these generated alternatives. The heuristic function, or closeness weight, is also used for directing the search process to the most profitable choice of layout by acquiring knowledge from the knowledge base. An experimental system is constructed for testing purposes only. The results from the system show potential for solving complex facility layout problems.
