摘要:
150th Anniversary of the Royal Society of ChemistryOn behalf of the Dalton Division, I offer a warm welcome to thisissue of Dalton Transactions, the purpose of which is to celebratethe 150th Anniversary of the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC).Originally named the Chemical Society (founded in 1841), theRSC evolved in 1980 from a series of mergers involving theSociety for Analytical Chemistry (founded in 1874), the RoyalInstitute of Chemistry (founded in 1877) and the FaradaySociety (founded in 1903).The RSC is a learned and professional society with a world-wide membership of 41 500. It aims to advance the science ofchemistry and its applications, and to maintain high standardsof competence and integrity among practising chemists. The Dalton Division, named of course after John Dalton whodied just three years after the Chemical Society was founded,is one of six Divisions within the RSC serving the scientificinterests of its members.Dalton, by determining the relativeweights of the atoms which take part in chemical change, demonstrated that such a change could be represented quanti-tatively by a chemical equation; and he enunciated the AtomicTheory of Chemistry by which these changes are explained. Assuch he should be regarded as one of the founders of modernchemistry and the Division is proud to bear his name.Dalton Transactions, as the RSC journal affiliated to theDalton Division, is an international journal of high repute forthe dissemination of important new chemistry in all areas ofinorganic chemistry. It derives from the Journal of the ChemicalSociety (A), the change of name occurring in 1972.Both the Dalton Division and Dalton Transactions welcomethe opportunity to play their part in marking the 150thAnniversary of the RSC. During the Anniversary Year severalevents are being organised to celebrate this milestone, of whichthis special issue of Dalton Transactions is one. Its publication, which is in addition to the usual 12 monthly issues, has beendesigned to coincide with the Annual Chemical Congress of theRSC to be held at Imperial College, London (8-11th April1991). Contributions were by invitation from the DaltonEditorial Board under the chairmanship of Malcolm Wall-bridge. Members of the Board wished to cover as far as possiblethe main current topics of interest to inorganic chemists, and tohave primary research papers by a representative selection ofcontributors to the subject, drawn from an international as wellas a strong domestic contingent. Additionally five distinguishedcolleagues were asked to provide introductory articles high-lighting some of the important areas of the subject on which theycould speak with particular authority. Thanks are due to the authors of the papers and the refereeswho have acted with commendable alacrity. Also I wish toacknowledge our appreciation of the efforts that have been putinto this venture by the editorial staff in Thomas Graham Houseworking with Janet Dean. In conclusion we trust that ourJournal will maintain its position as a leading medium forthe publication of important papers in all areas of inorganicchemistry.Michael F.LappertPresident of Dalton Division, RSDalton TransactionsSpecial Issue - April 1991The Royal Society of Chemistry celebrates its 150th Anniversary in I991 and tocommemorate this event, a special issue of Dalton Transactions will be publishedin April 1991.Publication will coincide with the 150th Anniversary Congress which will be heldat Imperial College, London (841th April 1991).The issue will include five introductory articles written by Professor M.
