摘要:
A recent attempt to place the name of Clark Wissler in a central position in the history of anthropology ignores his blatant racism. Wissler's racism was evident not only in scholarly and popular circles, but, as well, was employed by the United States government to give ‘scientific’ status to its Immigration Act of 1924. The Act favoured the inflow of Northwest Europeans at the expense of Eastern European Jews and other groups who had been immigrating in massive numbers, and whose presence had become increasingly unwelcome. It was used by the Nazi propaganda machine to justify German anti‐Semitism in 1933 and thereafter, and by the United States Department of State to turn away the eventual victims of Nazi genocide. Wissler thus provides a profound scholarly and human contrast to Franz Boas, who publicly deplored racism and immigration restriction. Boas' stand as a ‘citizen‐scientist’ partly accounts for his under‐evaluation by later anthropologists, most recently by Derek Freeman in hisMargaret M

摘要:
We present the text of the ribald song sung during the Skyrocket Festival of Northeast Thailand, and discuss the implications of the text as it relates to overt and covert functions of this festival. Contrary to Tambiah and other writers, we conclude that the festival is a complex, multifunctional one in which the crudity of the song and other related behaviour plays a central part.

摘要:
Indifference to events which may actually have taken place between the Dreamtime and European contact is commonly held to be a salient feature of traditional Aboriginal thought. This contention contains a significant element of truth but it may have been exaggerated by some anthropologists. Structural‐functionalist emphases on myth as charter led not only to the rejection of historical interpretations of Aboriginal myths which were ill‐considered and naïve, but also to an excessive neglect of potentially fruitful attempts to extract from myths clues about post‐Dreamtime experiences. This neglect has unduly strengthened the view that Aboriginal thought is entirelysui generisand that its supposed indifference to human history is an inescapable cultural attribute of Aboriginality. A sketch is offered for a reappraisal of the significance of Aboriginal myths for Aboriginal h

In the April 1984Mankindwe published a paper by S. J. Thiele entitled `Anti‐intellectualism and the “Aboriginal Problem”: Colin Tatz and the “Self Determination” Approach‘ (Vol. 14:165–178). In December 1984 a reply from Colin Tatz appeared (Mankind14:401–3). We asked a number of specialists in Aboriginal studies to comment on the views expressed in these two contributions: the five responses received appear in the following pages. Thiele and Tatz have added their ref
