摘要:
Over the past two decades, writings generalizing about the place of Aborigines in Australia at the national level and proposing policies have been dominated by what I will call the ‘self‐determination’ approach. This approach has made little theoretical or substantive contribution at the level at which moral judgement and policy have been directed because moral and political concerns have constrained and biased inquiry. This paper offers a critique of the self‐determination approach by focusing on the works of Professor Tatz, who has been a major influence in its development and proselyt

摘要:
The Bimin‐Kuskusmin of the West Sepik interior of Papua New Guinea elaborate a complex folk theory of procreation that becomes the ‘natural’ foundation of some ideologically significant constructions of the individual, the person, gender, and societal continuity. Drawing on certain aspects of Weiner's model of reproduction and regeneration, symbols of substance and insubstantial ‘spirit’ that form this ‘natural’ foundation of the Bimin‐Kuskusmin ideology of birth, death, and rebirth are explored in contexts of rites of passage that mark the course of the life‐cycle from conception to death and ancestorhood. The key symbols of this cultural ideology are the enduring substances of bone, bone marrow, andfiniikspirit, which are the basis of reckoning the cyclical regeneration o

摘要:
This paper explores expressions of gender symbolism in a fertility cult of Mount Hagen. This cult – theamb kor– has been analysed by Andrew Strathern in terms of its symbolic construction as a set of statements about male/female relations, his emphasis being on the operation of reversal, pairing and opposition within the cult. My contention is that such a structural analysis is insufficient. Through a discussion of historical process in Hagen I attempt to locateamb korin a more materialist framework, viewing is as a discourse on the state of power relations in Hagen. In this respect, I seeamb koras being equally a set of statements about male/male relations as male/fem
