摘要:
AbstractA new test object has been developed that generates images of transducer beam patterns on B‐mode hardcopy. The extent and depth of the transducer focal zone are measured from these images. The predictions made from test object images were verified in the clinical images obtained from two 3.5‐MHz focused transducers. Using the test object images, we have found that we can make a more rational selection of transducer for each clinical situat

摘要:
AbstractMicrocephaly (small head) is clinically important only if there is concomitant micrencephaly (small brain). Extensive studies on patients in mental institutions have shown that there is close correlation among microcephaly, micrencephaly, and mental retardation when the head is more than three standard deviations below the norm. If the small head is less than two standard deviations below the norm, no strong correlation exists with either small brain or mental retardation. High‐resolution ultrasound permits imaging of the fetal head in utero, allowing accurate evaluation of head size and detection of intracranial anomalies. The microcephalics detected in utero over a 2‐year period form the basis of this series, showing close correlation with the known clinical data on children with microcephaly. An approach to ultrasound detection and evaluation of fetal microcephaly is propo

摘要:
AbstractThere is virtually nothing in the literature about patients' perceptions and misconceptions regarding sonography. From January to June, 1979, 204 patients at the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City were asked to fill out questionnaires before and after their sonographic examinations. The results showed that many of the first‐time patients did not know what to expect, had never heard of ultrasound, and were incorrectly prepared for the examination. Education of both patients and physicians is needed to prevent unnecessary patient anxiety and to encourage the use of this safe and accurate diagnostic modalit

摘要:
AbstractSubplacental tissue frequently appears as a less echogenic zone adjacent to the more echogenic parenchymal texture of the placenta on gray‐scale sonograms. This complex of parenchymal structures is useful in specifically localizing placental position and extent, especially in posteriorly positioned placentas, which may be shadowed by the fetus, or in cases in which focally thickened portions of the myometrium or reverberation artifact may simulate the placent

摘要:
AbstractThree female patients with ultrasound criteria of pelvic cysts but with wads of omentum mimicking cystic structures are reported. In 2 patients the omentum was involved in an inflammatory process; in the third, normal omentum was found filling old surgical defects. All were confirmed surgically.

摘要:
AbstractEchocardiographic recordings from a patient with a prosthetic mitral valve revealed echoes within the left ventricular cavity that mimicked the motion pattern of a „normal”︁ anterior mitral leaflet. The echo pattern was continuous, recorded from multiple views, and by two‐dimensional images it was localized to the level of the papillary muscles. Although thrombus and vegetation are possibilities, this echo probably originates from a pliable chordal structure severed but not removed at the time of surgery. The apparent responsiveness to hemodynamic influences was striking, and we suggest that the prevalence and pathophysiologic implications of such findings are of potential

摘要:
AbstractClinical use of A‐ and B‐mode echoencephalography in neurology, neurosurgery, and pediatrics is discussed, and some results are presented. Descriptions are given of several techniques to obtain two‐dimensional echoencephalographic pictures. Two‐dimensional echoencephalography can be particularly helpful with hydrocephalic babies. Recording techniques for pulsatile echoencephalography and the factors influencing the shape of cerebral echo pulsations are considered. Also, the diagnostic value of pulsatile echoencephalography in several brain diseases is di
