AbstractNeonatal anthropometry, including timed skinfold measurements, was performed on 55 products of selected pregnancies. These skinfold measurements were compared with published standards of measurements obtained by similar techniques. Values outside the 3rd percentile to 97th percentile range were overlaid on the birth weight/menstrual age relationship of these subjects. Seven of 10 subjects with the lowest midtriceps skinfolds weighed more than 2500 g at birth (2 more than 3500 g) and 2 of 4 with the largest midtriceps skinfold had birth weights less than 4000 g. This comparison emphasizes the imprecision of birth weight as a measure of quality of fetal growth. Since skinfold thickness measurement is cumbersome for clinical use, other neonatal measures that may be more readily available to the clinician were examined for correlation with skinfolds. Simple birth weight/crown–heel length ratio was found to have the closest relationship of the parameters examined. Although estimated fetal weight was found to be the ultrasonography‐derived parameter best correlated with skinfold thickness, ultrasonography discriminated poorly between babies with normal and low skinfolds. AbstractAccurate assessment of uterine size and significance of uterine enlargement are common clinical problems. We examined 156 patients by sonography prior to scheduled hysterectomy. Uterine volumes from normal‐sized uteri were calculated from the sonograms using the equation of a prolate ellipsoid formula, and these calculated volumes were highly correlated with actual measured uterine volumes. Mean values and normal ranges of uterine weight were determined. These values are of particular value in postmenopausal patients in whom subjective evaluation of uterine enlargement is often difficult. AbstractFifteen patients with subacute thyroiditis were studied with thyroid sonography. There were local hypoechoic areas in all patients during the active phase of the disease. Among 6 patients who underwent follow‐up studies during the course of treatment, 3 had recurrence or aggravation of clinical symptoms such as painful swelling of the thyroid region, which was associated with, and sometimes preceded by, spread or reappearance of the sonographic abnormality. AbstractBecause of their small size, the caudate lobe veins (CLV) are not routinely imaged with ultrasonography. We recently examined 4 patients with elevated central venous pressure in whom the CLV were easily identifiable. To our knowledge this is the first report of sonographic visualization of these veins. We suggest that visualization of the CLV may not be as rare as previously presumed, and based on our experience, we will propose a nomenclature system for these veins.

AbstractIn order to examine the liver during thoracotomy, a new intraoperative imaging technique called “transdiaphragmatic liver scanning” was developed. Trans‐diaphragmatic scanning performed with high‐frequency transducers provided clear visualization of the entire liver from the thoracic cavity through the diaphragm. In our study, transdiaphragmatic scanning was used in 27 thoracotomy operations performed for the treatment of malignant diseases, including lung and esophageal cancers. One 5‐mm liver cyst, one 3‐mm × 4‐mm hemangioma, and one 5‐mm × 6‐mm ill‐defined lesion (possible metastasis), all of which were unrecognized preoperatively, were detected. In 3 operations, preoperatively suspected liver metastases were excluded by transdiaphragmatic scanning.
