AbstractThe ultrasonographic examination of the fluid‐filled stomach in five standardized positions permits the transabdominal visualization of the gastric wall in all sections of the organ. In a prospective study, 107 patients were examined—68 with a pathological change in the wall of the stomach and 39 with no gastric disease. In 56 patients (82.4%) the lesion was correctly identified. In addition to wall‐infiltrating processes and stenoses, circumscribed space‐occupying lesions were also detected; for example, localized carcinomas, leiomyosarcomas, lymphomas, leiomyomas, polyps, giant folds, and impressions of the gastric wall. Thirty‐seven patients (94.9%) with no gastric disease were considered normal at the ultrasonographic examination. The procedure suggests itself not only as a supplement to endoscopy and diagnostic X‐rays, but also as a diagnostic alternative in selected patients who cannot be stressed by these methods. AbstractHip ultrasound was performed on 44 children (114 exams) presenting with a painful hip or a limp thought to be due to hip disease. Effusions were found in 20 patients (21 hips). Hip ultrasound in combination with aspiration of the joint was found to be useful in diagnosis of osteomyelitis and septic joints, transient synovitis, trauma, and traumatic synovitis. We had no false positives or false negatives for hip effusions by ultrasound. In previous reports, absolute measurements have been relied upon for determination of hip effusions. We present a characteristic appearance of a capsule with and without abnormal joints fluid. The results of these 44 patients are summarized.

AbstractBy instilling water into the large intestine, sonographic visualization of the whole length of the colon from the rectosigmoid to the cecum can be achieved. Furthermore, using this method, it is possible to evaluate the lumen, the intestinal wall, and the surrounding connective tissue in detail. In our study, severe, active colonic Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis could be detected by diagnostic sonography of the colon with a sensitivity of 91% and 89%, respectively. Pathological changes were subsequently confirmed by colonoscopy. Differing echo patterns made differentiation of these two diseases possible. Our results thus show that colonic sonography is a diagnostic procedure that promises to greatly facilitate the evaluation and differentiation of inflammatory large bowel diseases.

AbstractHead and abdominal circumferences (HC, AC) can be measured directly or estimated from diameters. Accurate prediction of circumference growth after 26 weeks depends on growth model specification and the quality of the circumference measurement method used. To evaluate the effect of the method of measurement, direct and estimated HC and AC values from 20 normal fetuses, obtained between 15 and 38 weeks, were used to determine two pairs of functions for specifying HC and AC growth models. The two HC and AC data sets and pairs of model specification functions were used in various combinations to determine HC and AC growth models, to predict growth after 26 weeks, and to compare predicted values to actual measurements. Systematic and random prediction errors were determined for each combination. For HC no differences in either type of error were found. Similar results were obtained for AC with one exception, a statistically significant difference in systematic error between thedirectly measured circumferences — model specification based on estimated valuescombination and theestimated circumferences — model specification based on directly measured valuescombination. These results indicate that the prediction of future HC and AC growth is not significantly affected by the type of circumference measurement procedure used except in extreme cases where circumference measurements are made on parts of the body that can be easily distor
