摘要:
The daughter of Colston E. Warne reviews the social history of the consumer movement and her father's role in that movement. She speaks of her father's college days, his role as President of Consumers Union (CU) in the pre‐ and post‐war years, CU's role in the beginning of ACCI, and the development of an international consumer movem

Three quasi‐experimental research designs which promise the possibility of yielding strong conclusions about the effects of consumer protection initiatives are reviewed. The threats to internal validity which face these designs are described and illustrated with specific studies. The broader implications of evaluation research for consumer protection are discusse

摘要:
This paper describes a research methodology which assesses the efficiency of consumer decision‐making based on the types and amounts of informational cues used. A simple operational method is used to classify consumers into three levels of consumer efficiency based on how well they perform in assessing the optimal choice. The information chosen by perfectly efficient consumers, or those scoring at the maximum level of efficiency, is examined for indicators of optimal information seeking and decision‐making techniq

摘要:
The study of consumer behavior has dealt largely with acquisition and consumption. Very little attention has been given to a third stage‐disposition. This paper presents a paradigm of consumer product disposition processes. The paradigm shows the person, product and situation as components influencing the disposition proces

This paper presents an empirical investigation of willingness to participate in public meetings to provide consumer inputs for designing public transportation services. 摘要:
The managerial behavior of young families in the pursuit of home ownership was explored with a sample of 1267 households from northwestern lowa. Young owners had higher incomes and higher monthly housing expenses than young nonowners, but the percentage of income devoted to housing did not differ between young owners and young nonowners. Young owners did not have a higher number of full‐time workers per household than young nonowners. Young owners had higher persons‐per‐room ratios and had compromised neighborhood accessibility standards, but not housing quality standards. The findings indicate that a high level of monetary resources was a key factor in enabling young families to own a single‐family detached dwelling, for there were few important compromises in housing space and

摘要:
This paper examined the credit behavior during the second year of a two‐year study of bank credit card use by a group of low income consumers who had had a consumer education course. It reports findings about factors affecting changes in repayment practices over the two‐year period. Different variables were found to affect repayment behavior at different points in time with elements from traditional credit scoring schemes becoming important in the second year of st

摘要:
Two major issues in the area of consumer product safety are who should protect the consumer and how much protection should be provided. Underlying both these questions are concerns for the consumer's freedom of choice and efficiency. Is the consumer the most efficient risk reducer or should risk reduction be left to the regulatory authorities? Given resources constraints which preclude the attainment of 100 percent protection, what is the optimal degree of protection. This paper applied economic analysis, including cost‐benefit analysis, to an examination of both issues. The advantages and disadvantages of the informed buyer approach versus the regulatory approach to the assignment of responsibility for consumer protection are first discussed. Cost‐benefit analysis is then applied to an evaluation of actual and hypothetical flammability standards for children's sleepwear and clothing. The two sleepwear standards proved cost effective in contrast to the two clothing standards where the costs of providing additional protection to the cosumer far exceeded the benefits. The results indicate the feasibility and utility of cost‐benefit analysis in determining how much protection should be pro

摘要:
Historically, the decision about participation in an individual retirement account (IRA) has been an approximate one. Consumers and financial advisors have not had any precise way to evaluate the potential benefits of an IRA. As a result of this lack of information, many eligible people may have foregone a very worth while savings plan. This article provides a precise methodology for evaluating the benefits consumers can realize from IRAs and through computer simulation, provides estimates of “gain factors” for a wide variety of situations. These gain factors allow individual consumers to estimate the potential benefits of an IRA over a conventional savings plan. The evidence suggests that the potential gains are probably much greater than is commonly reali

摘要:
The structure of the real estate industry may work against the consumer's interest by maintaining artificially high commission rates and restricting access to the Multiple Listing Service. This article examines a significant antitrust problem that affects the consumer directly at the local level and suggests some alternative remedies such as making the public aware that commissions are negotiable and doing away with the limitation of access to Multiple Listing Services to members of local boards of Realtors. The article also suggests that in addition to strengthening state real estate commissions as regulatory bodies, state antitrust units can provide effective enforcement mechanisms.
