摘要:
In the BasidiomycetePanus tigrinusvar.tigrinus, continuous fluorescent light results in increased production of numbers of abnormal fruiting bodies. With progressively longer dark periods before continuous light there is a decrease of abnormal fruits. The total number of fruiting bodies remains relatively constant regardless of light/dark treatment. However, no fruiting occurs under conditions of total darkness. Differentiation between normal and abnormal fruiting bodies begins after light exposure, and the normal primordia develop a dark pigmentation near the tip. Such pigmentation is believed to be significant in inducing normal basidiocarps.

摘要:
Lettuce (Lactuca sativaL.) seedlings treated with gibberellic acid (GA) for 72 h produced hypocotyls 600% longer than the water controls. The process of elongation was accelerated by GA. Also, for maximum elongation, presence of GA was not necessary after 20 h. Short term treatments of seedlings with GA indicated that the seedlings were most 'sensitive' to GA after 8 h of growth in water. Colchicine inhibited the GA-induced elongation. Its effect was maximal if it was applied within the first 2 h after GA treatment irrespective of the stage of hypocotyl development; the inhibition was progressively lessened after 2 h and lost after 36 h. These kinetic data are presented together with measurements of hypocotyl cell lengths and widths and provide a basis for correlated ultrastructural studies.

摘要:
Up to 24% of the peroxidase of purified cell walls of soybean hypocotyls was released by incubation of cell walls with hydrolytic enzymes secreted by the fungusSclerotium rolfsii. This estimate is based on comparison of peroxidase activity recovered in the medium with peroxidase activity in unincubated cell walls, estimated by a new assay. The peroxidase-release reaction occurs at 0 °C at half the rate at 30 °C. The peroxidase-release reaction occurs almost equally fast in the pH range of 3.5 to 8.0. The release of peroxidase from cell walls cannot be attributed solely to arabanase, polygalacturonase, or cellulase in the culture filtrate, although on Sephadex G-75 chromatography these activities overlap the peroxidase-releasing activity. Culture filtrate released less than 5% of the hydroxyproline protein of the cell walls.

摘要:
The esterase isozyme patterns for irradiated and non-irradiated soybean seed and seedlings were determined by starch gel electrophoresis. Patterns were determined for cotyledons, hypocotyl, epicotyl, first pair of leaves, and roots. Two different esterase systems, E1 and E2, were detected by using appropriate substrates. E1 produces three anodic bands with both α- and β-naphthyl acetate. E2 acts only on α-naphthyl acetate producing three cathodic bands. Radiation did not change the patterns. Results indicate that esterase isozymes are more abundant in the aerial than in the underground portion of developing seedlings.
