摘要:
Some samples of buckwheat "seeds" were treated with X-rays at doses ranging from 5 to 40 thousand roentgens, and other samples with thermal neutrons for times ranging from 4 to 33.5 hours and at doses ranging from 0.61 × 1013to 5.87 × 1013thermal neutrons per cm2. Lower doses of both X-rays and thermal neutrons stimulated earliness of development (sprouting, expansion of first true leaf, and flowering) and height. Higher doses produced a retarding effect on these characters. The seed set on selling was reduced in the treated material, with thermal neutrons having a more drastic effect than X-rays. Progenies of the treated plants surpassed the controls in earliness, height, and the average maximum number of leaves per plant and were significantly more self-fertile. It is suggested that increased heterozygosity and radiation-induced constructive mutations of polygenes may both contribute to the improvement of earliness, plant height, and self-fertility in buckwheat treated by irradiation.
