Injectionsof orange oils with Orange oils, injection of low and high terpene d-limonene, content, d-limonene Murine subcutaneous and intravenous Benzo(rst)pentaphene and a mixture of Carcinogenesis d-limonene and 6% Tumor incidence of its hydroperoxide, were made into the same site of C57BL/6 Jax mice 24 h after subcutaneous injections of 25 μg of dibenzpyrene (DBP) in tricaprylin. This procedure reduced the tumor incidence to less than 50% after 30 weeks (compared with 80% in controls receiving the carcinogen alone or the carcinogen followed by tricaprylin). The time of latency was markedly prolonged. In A mice with spontaneous adenomas and adenomas induced with sc carcinogen, orange oils, as well as limonene, reduced the incidence of lung adenomas when given weekly for from 13 to 16 weeks. The acceleration of tumor growth usually observed following the transfer of multiple pooled carcinogen injection sites into new hosts was inhibited by orange oils

Localization of metals in human tissue, has been observed in the electron probe microanalyzer. Tissues from seven organs, of malignant, and normal pathology, were surveyed and showed extremely high concentrations of Ca, Ti, Cr, Fe, Ni, Cu and Zn as well as occasional other metallic elements. The frequency of occurrence of metals in high concentrations appeared to be greater in malignant tissue. Electron microscopy was employed to locate metals within microtomed sections.

The accumulations of 131I-phenolphthalein produced by the enzymatic hydrolysis of the glucuronide is an excellent index of β-glucuronidase activity. A new serologic test for the detection of abnormal protein with a high specificity for cancer has been researched for five years with considerable quiet success. The Lewis Test presents evidence of the ability to provide valuable diagnostic or therapeutic information to the clinician and/or public health investigator. No laboratory test is absolute in its accuracy and the Lewis Test is no exception. However, the data presented suggest the ability of the Lewis Test to detect cancer in better than ninety per cent of those tested—certainly offering great promise in an area where no similar test exist

This paper reports the results obtained by the application of gas-liquid chromatographic techniques in determining the concentrations of 14 amino acids at different stages of the development of Walker 256 carcinoma which was implanted in 4 groups of Wistar rats. (1) Homogenates of rat mammarytumours induced by 7,12-Dimethylbenz(a)anthracene cause the formation of specific antisera in rabbits. (2) Absorption against relevant normal tissues and rat serum eliminates non-specific precipitations. (3) By the Ouchterlony double-diffusion method in agar, all the tumours tested formed well-defined precipitation lines against the antisera from immunized rabbits, within 24 h at room temperature. (4) Precipitation lines were observed regardless of the histological type of tumour from which the homogenate was obtained. The tumour histology ranged from examples of malignant adenocarcinomas to benign hyperplasia. (5) The process of growth, be it benign or malignant at the time when the tumour was removed seems to be closely associated with the presence of a specific protein, which by the method used could not be detected in simple mammary hyperplasia (due to pregnancy or lactation).

The technical aspects and preliminary results of an in vitro radioassay for tumor chemosensitivity are described. A representative series of gynecologic cancers has been studied. The procedure monitors inhibition of uptake of protein and nucleic acid precursors and requires only short incubation periods and small numbers of cells. Our initial data using tritiated thymidine and a variety of common chemotherapeutic drugs indicate that significant short-term (2 h) isotope uptake takes place and inhibition by several drugs can consistently be demonstrated. However, it is also obvious that the principal effects observed relates in most cases to the specific mode of action of individual drugs on precursor pathways, rather than intrinsic cytotoxicity on each tumor strain. The limitations of the method and a partial solution to the major problems in data interpretation are briefly discussed

Hydrazine sulfate was found to be a potent inhibitor of the Waker 256 intramuscular carcinoma in rats. In dosages ranging from 4 mg/kg to 128 mg/kg rat body weight, the tumor inhibitions ranged from 28% to 94%, respectively. Only at a dose, of 128 mg/kg was there any drug-induced mortality; there was indication of drug-induced weight loss at the 64 mg/kg dosage level. At dosages ranging from below 64 mg/kg to 4 mg/kg there was no manifest form of toxicity (i.e., mortality or weight loss), even though tumor inhibition was still high and statistically significant. Hydrazine sulfate is a known PEP KC (phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase) inhibitor, and this mechanism is thought to be responsible for the tumor inhibition produced. It is suggested that direct experimental evidence of such a mechanism of action would implicate an entire new chemotherapy, based on the interruption of cachexia via gluconeogenesis inhibition.

The incidence of bovine lymphosarcoma was studied in 79,492 male adult Indian cattle of 7 different breeds and crossbreeds from one abattoir in Bombay. One of 23,066 Malvi animals, a bullock, was detected with multicentric LS with symmetrically enlarged lymph nodes and spleen. Examination of blood, lymph nodes and spleen confirmed the leukotic condition of the animal. The incidence of bovine LS in India and Western countries is compared, and the interrelationship between leukemia in different species of domestic animals and man is discussed. The need for further epidemiological studies of leukemia in domestic pets and food producing animals in India is suggested.

The problem of the method of movement in vitro of a particular type of cell population (monolayers of epitheliocytes) form mouse kidney was investigated by means of time-lapse microcinemtograpy. It was found that within the daily enlarging cell sheet some cells move towards the explant. The possibility that the in vivo organization of these cells plays a role is suggested.
