Pulmonary venous wedge pressure closely reflects the pulmonary arterial mean pressure. Pulmonary arterial wedge pressure is not significantly different from the left atrial mean pressure. Neither the former nor the latter is an approximation of the pulmonary capillary pressure.

In 12 patients with atrial septal defect or anomalous pulmonary venous connection, pulmonary vein wedge mean pressure uniformly exceeded mean pressure in the left atrium or pulmonary vein and with one exception was less than mean pressure in the pulmonary artery. There was a positive correlation between pulmonary arteriolar resistance and the difference in pressure between pulmonary artery and pulmonary vein wedge position. The oxygen saturation of blood, withdrawn from the pulmonary vein wedge position, uniformly exceeded that of left atrial and usually also that of pulmonary vein blood.

A method of continuous recording of the disappearance of radioactive materials from the circulating blood is described. By cannulation of the right femoral artery of dogs and leading the tubing past a scintillation counter into the right femoral vein a complete circuit is established in which the concentration of radioactivity may be continuously monitored. Curves showing concentration of the radioactive material versus time have been obtained following injection of iodinated (I131) plasma, Na24, I131, P32, K42, and colloidal Au198. No errors are introduced by sample withdrawal, timing of samples, or geometric variations.

A method for continuous recording of flowing arterial blood in humans has demonstrated that injected iodinated (I131) human serum albumin disappears at variable rates from the circulation when losses are calculated from a two hour extrapolation to zero time. Losses from the circulation during the ten minute interval following injection were minimal. The recorded disappearance curve inscribed during the two hour period subsequent to mixing apparently declines as a single exponential function. In the absence of disturbed circulatory states, blood volume calculated from a single ten minute sample agreed with values obtained by extrapolation within the limits of error of counting methods.

Cooling the myocardium is an effective method for abolishing ventricular fibrillation. Using this method as a reference a comparison between five other methods for cardiac resuscitation is made using the Langendorff preparation of the rabbit's heart.

Administration of pure oxygen to denervated dog heart-lung preparation subjected to hypothermia does not affect the temperature that induces terminal ventricular fibrillation even when the progressive alkalemia that occurs is prevented. It is concluded that hypoxia of the myocardium is not a factor in the terminal cardiac arrest that supervenes in hypothermia of the heart-lung preparation.

Dinitrophenol (DNP) induces failure of the canine heart-lung-preparation and increases specifically its O2-consumption. Lanatoside C compensates this failure as long as the degree of dinitrophenol poisoning is moderate and the O2-supply sufficiently ample. This cardiac glycoside does not influence the metabolic action of dinitrophenol, i.e. the increased O2-consumption, nor does it counteract the failure due to a large degree of dinitrophenol poisoning. From these findings the mechanism of action of Lanatoside C is discussed.

A new type electromagnetic flowmeter which utilizes an alternating square wave magnetic field applied to the unopened blood vessel is described. It attains stability of baseline and sensitivity not possible with older D.C. and A.C. meters and therefore puts measurement of blood flow through the unopened vessel on a practical basis.

The conversion of ethanolamine to phosphatidyl choline was studied in liver slices from rats exposed to a high dietary intake of cholesterol in the presence of cholic acid. Cholesterol stimulated phosphatidyl choline formation per unit weight of liver tissue and increased the total liver mass thereby increasing further the total yield of phosphatidyl choline. These results are contrasted with the opposite effect of cholesterol on the liver phosphatides of the rabbit. A relationship between phosphatides and cholesterol metabolism and between species susceptibility to cholesterol induced atherosclerosis and phosphatide metabolism is pointed out.
