The diffusion equation of flood wave propagation in channels with storage areas has been derived and its solution is expressed in the form of error functions. From this solution, two types of peak discharge are identified. Their behaviors are examined and compared with numerical solution of complete equations of motion and continuity. A subsidence parameter is defined in terms of diffusion coefficient and inflow characteristics, and evaluated from the results of numerical solution. Hydrographs computed using the diffusion method compares favorably to those obtained from the numerical solution.

A dynamic analysis of the effect of rollerons‐or gyroscopically‐actuated ailerons‐has been conducted for cruciform projectiles. The dynamic stability derivatives are determined from unsteady lifting‐surface solutions. The problem is formulated with two degrees of freedom, which include the body rolling and the rolleron deflection. It is found that the gyroscopic coupling, the inertial coupling and the aerodynamic coupling are all existing between the two motions. The gyroscopic effect basically constitutes a restoring moment while aerodynamic loads provide damping. The effectiveness of the rolleron in improving the damping‐in‐roll characteristic is demonstrated through a numerical example. It is also shown that an optimal design is in general existing.

Gamma radiation‐induced graftcopolymerization of serveral vinyl monomers onto paper‐cellulose has been investigated by using four kinds of domestic paper‐sheets. Among the vinyl monomers the ethyleneglycol dimethacrylate‐acryl amide (EGDMA‐A.Amide) system was found to give the best flexibility and the strongest tensile‐strength.

An investigation was carried out to determine the precipitation behavior and strengthening effect in various thermomechanical treatments of Al‐Zn‐Mg alloys containing high Zn and low Mg contents. The results show that the precipitation behavior is largely influenced by a plastic deformation in the thermomechanical treatment, and the final precipitate and dislocation structures are greatly related to the influenced precipitation behavior; hence the strengthening effect is determined. Different alloy contents also cause different influences. A super‐strengthening occurs in the T‐AHA (80°C) treatment attributed to the optimum combination of dislocation and precipitate structure.

Inference of high‐dimensional grammars such as tree grammars and web grammars is discussed. The k‐tail inference procedure for finite‐state grammars is extended to the case of regular tree grammars. The behavior of the k‐tail procedure with variable values of k is studied. The derivation diagram of context‐free web languages is introduced. A “semantic teacher” is used for the inference of web grammars. Application examples in picture and scene analysis are presented.

This study investigats a new approach‐the sequential approach‐ in job shop scheduling. The objective is to minimize the total of lateness cost and set‐up cost in job shops. Whenever a scheduling decision has to be made as to which job should receive the next processing, this approach considers each cost sequentially. One of the two costs is considered first, and every time all waiting jobs must be examined in terms of this cost, and only those jobs qualified would the second cost apply to and from which a job would be selected for processing. This investigation was carried out by using GASP IV simulation under a variety of job shop situations. The effectiveness of this approach and job selection mechanism constitute the main theme of this study.

Double Walsh series is used to obtain the piecewise‐constant solutions of integral equations as well as convolution integral. Some special properties of the Walsh functions are derived. The Volterra and Fredholm integral equations are transformed, respectively, into simultaneous linear algebraic equations, which are then solved to obtain the piecewise constant solutions.
