In this paper a simplified method is presented for solving the classical economic dispatch problem. An exact formula for calculating penalty factors associated with each generator on dispatch is derived in a simple way without using distribution factors of any origin. The minimal storage and computational advantages of the decoupling characteristic of power systems are then exploited to further simplify the calculation. Results of the proposed method applied to sample power systems are given to demonstrate its usefulness as both an on‐line and off‐line computational tool.

An approach to the design of a simple and low‐cost digital system for precise DC motor speed control is introduced. A microcomputer is employed to measure the motor speed, implement the control algorithm, and generate the controlling signal. The motor speed is measured in terms of feedback pulse width. The control algorithm is a digital PI controller with specific parameters such that the system has deadbeat response to step input. The controlling signal is converted by a digital circuit to specify the conducting period for the SCRs of a three‐phase full‐wave controlled rectifier which provides the DC source for the DC motor. The interface between the microcomputer and the outside world needs only three lines. The experiment on a 2 HP separately excited DC motor shows that the speed is regulated within 0.05% and the settling time is about 1.5 seconds under 25% load disturbance for some specific speeds.

A numerical technique for integrating the full Navier‐Stokes and diffusion equations through an initial value problem has been used to investigate the time development of a line buoyant source issuing in a density‐stratified environment. The basic physical features and some structures of the interactions of the motion at the intermediate mixing region are obtained. Results show that the stratification tends to inhibit the flow development of the buoyant source and to encourage the formation of a recirculatory vortex on the lower region near the source and the upper region.

The theory of rectangular microstrip antennas based on the line resonator model and the cavity model are summarized. The theoretical and experimental values of input impedance and radiation patterns are compared, and the discrepency between these two values are explained. A parallelogram microstrip antenna is constructed, and the input impedances are compared to those of the rectangular microstrip antenna.

Previous results on packet communications via a processing satellite withnslotted ALOHA uplinks andmTDM downlinks are extended to include a buffer in the switching node. Throughput and delay at equilibrium are obtained, and an alternative derivation for the expected number of retrials for any packet is also given. It is demonstrated through examples that on‐board storage provides results equivalent to multiple uplinks in obtaining gains in throughput, efficiency, and margin against instability. The analysis of system performance with respect to the number of uplinks, the number of downlinks, and the size of the on‐board storage is now complete.
