摘要:
Child life specialists can now earn a nationally recognized credential as a "Certified Child Life Specialist" from the Child Life Certifying Commission Yet, uncertainties linger about the nature of the child life specialist's identity roles, and status among health care professionals This article highlights the historical contexts within which a series of significant changes occurred in the profession's name How Emma Plank and Thest Bergmann, two pioneering authors in the field, influenced and were influenced by the play lady legacy is shown, and recommendations are made to find ways to honor the profession's past, while addressing the challenges of the 1990s.

摘要:
Awareness of the need for and efficacy of psychosocial services for pediatric oncology patients and their families has increased greatly in the last decade However, it is currently unknown to what extent these services are available Therefore, a national survey of pediatric oncologists was conducted to determine the availability of the following services psychological/psychiatric and social work consultation, support groups for patients and family members, nonpharmacological pain and anxiety management, and nonpharmacological treatment of anticipatory emesis Results suggest that most centers offer social work consultation and support groups to parents Fewer support groups are offered to patients and even fewer nonpharmacological services to assist patients in coping with anticipatory nausea and pain are offered Results are discussed in terms of the pattern of service delivery and cost-effectiveness.

摘要:
One hundred forty-seven parents of children in grades one through six and 53 elementary school teachers were surveyed to determine perceptions of children's knowledge and awareness about AIDS and attitudes regarding AIDS education in the early school years Results suggest that both parents and teachers underestimated children's awareness of and knowledge about AIDS Both groups agree that AIDS education is important for elementary school children and that the family should be the primary source of AIDS education Implications for the design and implementation of AIDS education programs are discussed.

摘要:
This paper summarizes the literature on the effects of maternal cocaine use, drawing implications from the literature for the development of early intervention programs It is suggested that intervention must be focused on maternal cocaine use among childbearing women as well as perinatal cocaine exposure among infants Emphasis is placed on interventions that promote a reduction in drug use by potential childbearing women as well as expectant mothers and that focus on promotion of optimum parent-child interaction and parenting skills as well as maternal self-sufficiency.

摘要:
Definitions of risk, types of risk factors used in longitudinal studies of the development of infants and toddlers (0-3 years), and the predictive power of risk models in assessing developmental delays are reviewed Biologic factors in combination with environmental risk factors give the best prediction of long-term outcome When biological or environmental risk factors are examined independently, they are not powerful predictors Recommendations are made for repeated screening for developmental risk factors during the first 3 years, and a model for provision of services is presented that assumes a differential risk algorithm.

摘要:
A methodology was developed for determining what parents with mental retardation knew about the information they should provide to the health professional when they suspect that their child is ill Parents with mental retardation were compared to parents without mental retardation using this methodology Neither group was very familiar with basic information such as what temperature means, why it is important to know a child's temperature, and how to accurately determine it Suggestions for systematically preparing parents in the adequate health care of their child are made.
