摘要:
Forty children with spina bifida participated in interview sessions designed to assess their general cognitive development, their conceptualizations of health and illness, and their understanding of their specific disability The results of the study indicated that the children's ratings in the area of health and illness were quite similar to ratings in cognitive development, with the ratings successively progressing with chronological age In general, the children received higher scores in health and illness conceptualizations than general cognitive development, with their ratings being the highest in spina bifida-related explanations The data suggest the importance of awareness by health care professionals of children's conceptualizations of health and illness in order to provide pediatric patient education information that is sensitive to children's levels of cognitive development and their understanding of health and illness.

摘要:
Fifty articles spanning a 30-year period were selected as representative of the literature concerning the effects of hospitalization on the nonpsychiatric adolescent patient Areas to emerge from this analysis were the effects of illness, visitor preference, sex and age differences, patient self-reports, posthospitalization behaviors, and methods of caring for the adolescent patient The direction in which the literature has moved as well as a number of critical areas for future research are presented.

摘要:
In an attempt to enhance its cost-benefit advantages, the coping skills training procedure of Siegel and Peterson (1980) was applied in a small group setting to 10 preschool children about to undergo dental treatment Compared to an experimenter-contact control group of seven children, the children who received coping skills training cried less, less frequently refused to open their mouths, and made fewer choking sounds while undergoing dental treatment The groups did not differ on a self-report measure of anxiety nor on heart rate during dental treatment Although limited in scope, the effects of the group treatment appear to be sufficient to indicate further empirical investigation of this format.

摘要:
The child born with a cleft palate may have many associated problems in feeding, respiration, dentition, hearing, speech, language, and intellectual development as well as in psychosocial development If the cleft is associated with a specific craniofacial syndrome, other physical problems may be present such as cardiac, kidney, digital, and visual involvement The need for an extensive treatment program can extend from birth through adulthood Important to the successful habilitation of these children is the early involvement of a multitude of specialists working together with the family in a team approach The primary task of the team is to make decisions concerning timing and sequence of intervention for each individual patient Several models for the delivery of health care services to the patient with a cleft palate are now in use A community-based team model will be described in this article as a unique approach to the management of this population and as one that may be implemented in a cost-effective manner in communities where cleft palate teams presently do not exist.

摘要:
Parents of 79 three- through seven-year-old children referred for developmental assessments because of concerns about their learning or behavior in a school or preschool setting completed the Behavioral Style Questionnaire of McDevitt and Carey Referred children without diagnosed problems in intellectual, academic, or language functioning generally had difficult temperaments, as did children found to have emotional problems In contrast to ratings of children drawn from a private pediatric practice, referred children's ratings demonstrated significantly higher activity and threshold of responsiveness and lower adaptability, intensity, mood, persistence, and rhythmicity Temperament appears to be a factor that can contribute to school failure.

摘要:
Increasing concern for the psychosocial needs of children with cancer has paralleled increasing survival rates This paper discusses the way in which a summer camp program can help to meet many social needs of children with cancer Also discussed is the proposal of a campsite to be operated year-round for families of children with cancer, and the way in which such a program can help to meet many needs of these families.

摘要:
Attention deficit disorder or the hyperactivity syndrome is a common and chronic disorder of childhood, with potential ramifications in adolescence and into adult life Treatment directed solely toward medication management has not been demonstrated to affect the outcome of this disorder significantly, and it is clear that comprehensive treatment is in order for these children The role of a clinical nurse specialist with skills and abilities complementary to that of the child psychiatrist or pediatrician who can provide many of the ancillary and direct services needed by these patients is described.
