摘要:
Thirty surgery patients between 4 and 12 years of age were interviewed preoperatively to assess their knowledge about medical instruments (e.g. the indentity and function of an anesthesia mask). Self-report measures of anxiety were also obtained Qualitative and quantitative age differences in children's understanding of medical instruments were noted, but no age differences were detected in overall level of anxiety of in the rank ordering of items considered least and most anxiety provoking Children who were most anxiety appeared to have the least understanding of medical instruments. These findings are discussed in terms of the literature on providing children with medical information. Recommendations for preparing different-aged children for medical procedures are offered.

摘要:
The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between the level of fear of medical experiences reported by children and their observed behavior in low-and high-threat medical situations. One hundred and twenty-eight children who participated in a health screening clinic were interviewed using a 12-item Medical Fear Questionnaire. Their behavior was observed during an interview (low threat) and when they received and immunization (high threat). The results indicated that children who are higher in fear demonstrate more negatively behaviors during both situations than those low in fear. Also all children behaved more negatively in the high-threat than the low-threat situation Implications for practitioners who work with children in medical setting are presented.

摘要:
This project collected data on the use of auditory tapes to reduce acute distress in pediatric patients during cardiac catheterization. Observations by the medical staff as well as patients' subjective experience indicated that the tapes were a useful adjunct in helping young patients tolerate the distress of the medical procedure. Differences in benefits were noted depending on the age of the patients. The greatest benefits were seen in the<1-year-old and 7- to 12-year-old age groups.

摘要:
This exploratory study examined the coping behaviors of 17 adolescents with cystic fibrosis in response to the stresses encountered in managing a debilitating chronic illness. Interviews identified stresses related to illness management education and age-specific developmental tasks. The self-report instrument Adolescent-Coping Orientation for Problem Experiences (A-COPE) reported low-level activity as the most helpful and professional support as the least helpful coping behavior for managing the illness.

摘要:
Although the term thanatology was coined in 1912 the study of death and dying in childhood was out of fashion until the 1970s. The pendulum then swung, and there was a shift from avoidance of the issue to its becoming almost a fad. During the past 10 years successful research of previously fatal malignancies and more careful and complex studies of children's and parents reactions to serious illness have given us the opportunity to provide wiser care for these patients and their families.

摘要:
Parents of children with phenylketonuria completed behavior rating forms for their affected children who were 8 through 12 years old. The 18 completed forms represented 824570360f the 22 children in this age range followed through one phenylketonuria clinic. The children who had received dietary management discontinued nutrient restrictions at about six years of age. In contrast to a comparison group used to standardize the rating scale, study children on average received ratings higher in distractibility, lower in intensity, lower in persistence, and lower in predictability of behavior. Ratings for activity, adaptability, approach mood and threshold of response were not significantly different between the groups. Within the study group none of the ratings correlated to a significant degree with measures of intelligence, age at diet initiation or age at diet termination.

摘要:
The paper covers the historical evolution of children's health one beginning on antiquity and proceeding into the present Various themes emerge including the indifference of society to children and the overtracts of infanticide and child abuse. By the 18th century new information in the field of medicine and chemistry led to improvements in the physical care of children. A sprit of huminism and the rise of the health professions joined forces in the late 19th century to institute important changes in the health status of children. Finally several current national trends we discussed in light of then potential impact on child health care.

摘要:
An innovative summer program that employs chronically ill adolescents as child life assistants in described. This program helps the chronically ill teens better cope with their chronic illness while at the same time allowing them to be "helpers" to other adolescents. Funding, supervision and dealing with problems are discussed as they relate to this unique approach to providing child life services. The authors feel that this program directly addresses three areas of concern and stress in the lives of the chronically ill adolescents (a) poor body image (b) social isolation and (c) issues of self-control.

摘要:
Long established in Scandinavia, several Lekoteks have recently opened in the united States Lekotek provides a play library for families with children with special needs. Although the Lekotek prograqm is relatively simple and inexpensive it serves a unique fuctions because it meets particular needs that other programs for the handicapped do not. Unlike most remedial or therapeutic programs. Lekotek focuses on positive playful interaction between children and parents thus putting the handicapped child in a normal context. This paper describes how and why Lekotek is so valuable to the families who use it.
