Seventy‐two school‐aged children and their parents participated in tape‐recorded interviews to identify the needs and concerns of the children and their perceptions of changes experienced by the family related to having a child with a chronic illness. The majority of the child subjects expressed worries about their sibling who had a chronic illness. The subjects identified more changes in their parents than in themselves.

Based on a sample of 60 children, 30 with juvenile diabetes, the self‐concepts of well siblings were evaluated as a function of (a) birth order, (b) sex of the children, and (c) sex of the sibling pairs. Siblings of diabetic children reported lower overall self‐concept scores. Younger siblings also had lower scores although this finding was common to both healthy and diabetic sibling pairs. Sibship to a male was associated with lower self‐concept scores, and having a diabetic brother and being male led to the lowest self‐concept scores. Implications are discussed in terms of research and suggestions for prevention and intervention are offered.

A nonrandom sample of 273 registered nurses completed a questionnaire that included the Parent Participation Attitude Scale and a personal and professional data section. Analysis of variance indicated that subjects who were married, were parents, were nursing supervisors, had a collegiate nursing education, or worked in Hospital 1 or 4 had more positive attitudes toward parent participation than did subjects who did not possess these characteristics. Further study of nurses from 28 hospitals found that head nurses, nursing supervisors, nurses with a professional nursing education, and nurses with a master's degree in nursing had significantly more accepting attitudes than did nurses without these characteristics.

Asking children for their opinions about and input into treatment decisions is an idea whose time has come. One way to implement this notion with school—aged children and adolescents is through the Participation in Treatment Decisions Model. This model is based on a child's rights and recognizes the varying levels of cognitive development and competency in children. Health professionals have a responsibility to be advocates for child patients, to protect their interests, values, and rights, and to include them in decisions affecting their health.

Improvements in the long‐term survival of children with cancer have made it possible for increasing numbers to return to school. School re‐entry presents challenges to children, parents, and teachers alike. This article describes the dilemmas and feelings teachers confront when the child with cancer returns to the classroom. The discussion demonstrates the need to include teachers as a more integral part of the health care team and offers guidance to those who want to ease the transition back to school for these children.

A survey of southern California hospitals identified current visitation policies and the rationale for the restrictions of siblings and peers. Questionnaires mailed to the nursing administrators of 212 hospitals having designated pediatric beds indicated that the majority allowed some form of sibling visitation. The rationales for restriction most frequently given were prevention of infection and spread of communicable disease. The results indicate a gap between sibling visitation research and the theoretical rationale given to support restrictive policies.

Taking care of ethnic families may be stressful and frustrating. Culturally sensitive caring does not require much of the health professional except receptivity and suspension of superior‐inferior value judgements relating to culture. This article provides awareness of sociocultural variables in Asian‐American families to facilitate effective transcultural health care delivery.

The process of well child care in public health clinics was evaluated using a peer review approach based on explicit criteria formulated by the peers themselves. The criteria defined what should be done in order to ensure good preventive care during a client‐provider encounter. The data from this study suggest that the traditional goals of public health are being pursued, but that a broader spectrum of preventive care, including attention to the child's psycho‐social development, is still lacking.
