Sex chromosome and chromatin examinations with hormone determinations were done on 41 cases seen at the gynecologic clinic suspected of having sexual developmental abnormalities. 22 (53.7%) had genetic, gonadal or hormonal abnormalities, including ovarian dysgenesis 9 cases, superfemale 1 case, XY pure gonadal dysgenesis 4 cases, 3 of whom had already developed gonadal malignancy, pseudovaginal perineoscrotal hypospadias 1 case, androgen insensitivity syndrome 2 cases and congenital adrenal hyperplasia 3 cases. The values and limitations of sex chromosome and chromatin examinations as well as the prevention of gonadal malignancy are discussed.

Human acid-acetone placental powder (PP) has corticotrophin-like and β-endorphin(β-EP)-like activity. In a β-EP radioimmunoassay the PP showed a potency of 4.82 ng/mg protein. In Sephadex G-75 filtration and high pressure liquid chromatography, the β-EP-like activity of PP was found in the corresponding chromatographic fractions as standard β-EP. The PP tested for opiate activity in a radioreceptor assay showed a dilution curve parallel to that of synthetic β-EP.

The concentrations of hydrochlorothiazide (HCT) in maternal and umbilical cord plasma and in amniotic fluid were determined at partus in 10 pregnancies. The levels of HCT in umbilical cord plasma were 0.1–0.8 of that in maternal plasma. The concentrations of the diuretic in amniotic fluid were up to 5 and 19 times higher than in maternal and umbilical cord plasma, respectively.

Single isolated lobules from human term placenta were bilaterally perfused with a balanced salt solution. The clearance of [3H]-antipyrine from the maternal to the fetal circulation was measured in an open perfusion circuit (no recycling). Acetylcholine (ACh, 10 and 100 μM) was added to the maternal perfusate to examine the hypothesis that ACh may control permeability and transport processes across the placental membranes. ACh reduced the flow- and diffusion-limited clearance of [3H]-antipyrine in a reversible manner. Simüar effects were obtained with physostigmine (eserine, 10 and 100 μM), an inhibitor of choline ester hydrolyzing enzymes, and ACh acted synergistically on this clearance reduction.
