Fetal renal anatomy was assessed in 660 apparently normal fetuses. The problems of technique of visualization of the kidneys are outlined. A correlation of fetal kidney length and gestational age is presented. The results are presented to be used as an adjunct in establishing fetal gestational age, as well as the assessment of normal renal morphology in routine obstetric ultrasound assessment.

Fetal movements (FM) may be spontaneous, originating in the fetus itself, or evoked by external stimuli. The relative rate of spontaneous and evoked FM has not yet been documented. As it is impossible to differentiate in a singleton pregnancy between these types of movements – the natural model of twin pregnancy was used. The FM of 10 normal twin pregnancies between 33 and 39 weeks of gestation were studied by two realtime ultrasounds, and were operated by two ultrasonographers over a period of 10 min. The mean number of independent FM of each fetus which occurred while the other fetus was resting was 7.9 FM and 7.7 FM, respectively (average 7.8 FM). A mean of 2.5 FM occurred simultaneously. The rate of independent FM was 75.7% and that of simultaneous FM was 24.3%. Vibroacoustic stimulation applied to the maternal abdomen evoked simultaneous movements of both fetuses in all cases. It is suggested that the independent FM may represent spontaneous FM and that the simultaneous FM may indicate the presence of an external stimuli and are therefore evoked responses.

A sustained-release administration form of oral ritodrine was introduced to cope with the problem of the short dosage interval inherent to conventional oral ritodrine administration. The bioavailability of this application form was assessed in a clinical study including 11 patients. With a dosage frequency of only 3 times daily and a dosage form index of 1.8, plasma levels of 14.6–26.5 ng/ml ritodrine (equivalent to an infusion rate of approximately 50 µg/min) were obtained without serious cardiovascular or metabolic side effects. In order to investigate the advantages and shortcomings of two application techniques proposed for the tcPCO2 electrode in the fetus we performed a trial using two electrodes with different modes of fixation synchronously. Comparing the transcutaneously measured values with the values of the fetal blood we found a statistically significant correlation for both techniques (r = 0.83 and 0.80, respectively). The mean values of the tcPCO2 though were significantly higher when the suction fixation was used compared with the glue fixation.

We studied the effects of human amniotic fluid (HAF) on the production of prostaglandin E (PGE) by amnion tissues using a technique of fresh-tissue superfusion. The production of PGE was linear with time for 4.5 h by amnion tissues superfused either with medium alone or with medium plus HAF (30% v/v). Tissues superfused with medium plus HAF produced significantly more PGE than tissues superfused with medium alone. Additionally, amnion tissue obtained at cesarean section, prior to labor, displayed a greater responsiveness to HAF than did amnion obtained after spontaneous labor.

Pelvic angiography was analyzed in 24 patients with malignant trophoblastic disease. Abnormal findings such as prominent uterine arteries, hypervascularity of the uterus, arteriovenous shunts, tumor staining and pooling were observed. Translucency was observed in all patients with choriocarcinoma. This finding was observed in only 3 of 11 patients (27.3%) with invasive mole and was not apparent in patients with an undetermined group. These differences were statistically significant. Translucency of pelvic angiography in malignant trophoblastic disease was more suggestive of choriocarcinoma than of invasive mole. Thus, translucency in pelvic angiography may be a distinctive finding with which to differentiate choriocarcinoma from invasive mole, without resection of the uterus.

Eight chronically instrumented fetal sheep were asphyxiated for 1 h by partial occlusion of the uterine blood supply. Fetal movements, as reflected by phasic activity in the nuchal electromyogram, decreased during the period of asphyxia. Tonic activity also decreased. The proportion of time spent in high-voltage electrocortical activity increased. Following release of the occlusion movements returned rapidly to the level present during the control period. The distribution of electrocortical activity patterns during the recovery period was similar to that during the control period.

The daily copper, zinc, iron, magnesium, calcium, sodium and potassium retention from the diet in rats during the second half of pregnancy have been determined and compared with those of adult virgin male and female rats. Pregnant rats had higher mean magnesium and potassium daily retentions than virgin females. The retention of essential metals changed along the second half of pregnancy towards lower values for copper and magnesium and higher ones for potassium. The net absolute metal retention followed the same trends. All other metals studied showed little global differences versus controls without clearly identifiable trends. The results suggest that metal retention is an adaptative element in maintaining the pregnant rat’s metal supply, as the considerable metal retention in the first half of pregnancy is modulated in the second half according to the actual needs of the maternofetal unit.
