Angiotensin-I-converting enzyme (ACE) activity was measured by a fluorimetric technique in serum samples taken from rat fetuses and their mothers. The samples were collected from anesthetized rats on consecutive days from day 18 of gestation to day 22 (day of delivery) and one day after birth. Fetal ACE activities were significantly higher than the corresponding maternal values which remained nearly unchanged during pregnancy. No dramatic changes in serum ACE activity of the developing fetuses could be observed.

We investigated the mutual role between amniotic fluid and fetus in the mechanism of initiating human parturition. Phosphatidylinositol in amniotic fluid began to increase from around 30 weeks to 36 or 37 weeks of gestation and then gradually decreased toward term. On the other hand, we demonstrated phospholipase C activity in amniotic fluid, which increased toward term, and we also demonstrated the high phospholipase C activity in neonatal urine, which was 58-fold higher than that in amniotic fluid. The molecular weight of phospholipase C from neonatal urine was estimated to be 33,000 daltons. It was concluded that the fetus relates to onset of labor by producing arachidonic acid in amniotic fluid by the reaction between phosphatidylinositol from fetal lung and phospholipase C from fetal urine.

The role of certain types of Escherichia coli in infectious diarrhea in infants and young children is well known. Infants who are breastfed are less prone to gastroenteritis during their first year of life. Antibodies against three types of fimbrial antigens (adhesions) of enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC) in the colostrum were studied. The hemagglutination inhibition test method was used to detect antibodies against ETEC adhesions, i.e. colonization factors, I and II and fimbria type I. The colostrum of mothers on the 1 st and 3rd day post partum was standard for the presence of antibodies. The results show that most of the colostrum samples contained antibodies against adhesions of the types of ETEC that we worked with. This study will enhance the knowledge as to why mothers should breast-feed their babies.

Acute cardiovascular and metabolic responses to the smoking of two cigarettes were studied in 12 normal and 7 diabetic women in the last trimester of pregnancy. When the responses to smoking were compared between the healthy and diabetic women no statistically significant difference was found except for 3-hydroxybuturic acid where diabetic women but not the normal patients reacted with a pronounced increase. It is concluded that smoking exerts a ketogenic influence in diabetic pregnancy.

Decreases in plasma fibronectin levels following surgery and subsequent to trauma and sepsis have been previously reported. There have been no reports, however, regarding plasma fibronectin levels following cesarean section. Plasma fibronectin levels were followed for 3 days postpartum in 49 patients including cesarean section control patients, patients with cephalopelvic disproportion, pregnancy-induced hypertension, and endometritis. Cesarean section and cephalopelvic disproportion were not associated with a change in postpartum fibronectin levels. Pregnancy-induced hypertension and endometritis did show a significant increase (p < 0.05) in plasma fibronectin levels. These levels are probably not decreased because of the large fibronectin pool in these otherwise healthy women.

The effect of norepinephrine (NE) stimulation of near-term pregnant rabbit myometrium was studied by comparing cumulative dose-response curves for NE and NE with prazosin or indomethacin. Prazosin blocked the stimulatory effects of NE. Indomethacin pretreatment resulted in attenuation, but not suppression of contractile activity. Myometrial activity was associated with a progressive increase in the synthesis of prostaglandin (PG) F2α·Our observations suggest that α-adrenergic agonists have some myometrial stimulating effect independent of PG production.

In women with clue-cell-positive discharge (CCPD), light-microscopical examination of the wet mount suggests a preference of bacteria for certain vaginal epithelial cells (VECs). To investigate this further, a light- and electron-microscopical study of patients and healthy controls was performed, with special emphasis on vitality and glycogen content of VECs and bacterial-epithelial cell interaction. Our study did not reveal morphologic differences between VECs of patients and controls. There was, however, a significant decrease in the percentages of vital and glycogen-containing VECs in CCPD (p < 0.001), probably caused by an overgrowth of (anaerobic) bacteria. In CCPD vaginal bacteria preferably colonize vital VECs. This could account for the relatively low percentage of clue cells in this condition.
