Numerous substituted trimethylcyclohexanones, trimethylcyclohexenols and trimethylhexanols have been synthesized from either 2,6,6-trimethylcyclohex-2-en-l-one or 3,5,5-trimethylcyclohex-2-en-l-one (isophorone). These compounds were examined as monocyclic partial structures of the tricyclic patchouli alcohol for their odor character and intensity. It was found that the size of the molecule (at least C10), substitution pattern, existence of a hindered tertiary hydroxyl group and the rigidity of structure were similarity determinants of the patchouli aroma character. Even so, the full balanced woody, earthy and camphoraceous character could not be found with any of them. Nevertheless, some of these simple monocyclic analogues possessed a lot of patchouli character. The odor intensity and quality for more than forty monocyclic compounds is described.

摘要:
The volatile fraction ofT. partheniumis characterized by a high camphor (44%) and trans-chrysanthenyl acetate (23%) content.T. vulgareoils, obtained from specimens growing in the province of Eastern Flanders (Belgium), conformed to the infra-specific chemical variability; three chemical types were identified: i.e., the β-thujone, trans-chrysanthenyl acetate and camphor/β-thujone types. A small scale experiment confirmed the mosquito-repellent activity ofT. vulgare, without allowing the identification of the active principle. However, the activity was much lower than that of diethyltoluamide containing commercial preparation.

The chemical composition of the essential oil of Portuguese juniper berries(Juniperus communisL. ssp.nanaSyme) was investigated by means of gas chromatography. This analysis was compared with that of an aqueous alcoholic extract of the juniper berries of similar origin. The qualitative composition of the oil and the alcoholic extract was found to be very similar. The major hydrocarbon components of the oil were α-pinene (20.0%), δ-cadinene (10.4%), limonene (8.7%), and myrcene (8.5%), whereas the alcoholic extract contained α-pinene (11.0%), δ-cadinene (12.8%), β-caryophyllene (9.8%) and germacrene D (9.3%). The main oxygenated constituent in both the oil and the extract was borneol (8.0–8.6% respectively).

The use ofChaetomium cochlioidesandDiplodia gossypinato perform biotransformations of bicyclic and tricyclic sesquiterpenoids was examined. Using humulene as a substrate, a strain ofChaetomium cochlioideswas found to produce numerous epoxides and hydroxylated derivatives. Hydroxylation of humulene monoepoxide proceeded much more readily than hydroxylation of the hydrocarbon. A further strainof Chaetomium cochlioideswas found to be enantioselective with respect to its products of biotransformation. Similar epoxidation and hydroxylation biotransformations were performed on caryophyllene with the same fungal strain. The use of a strain ofDiplodia gossypinato oxidize calarene and globulol also was studied. Many of the biotransformations studied were found to produce reasonable yields. Also, oxygenated sesquiterpenes were found to be more readily biotransformable than hydrocarbons. This was thought to be because of their better solubility in water.

摘要:
Using TLC and HPLC, the glucoside fraction of freshly harvested vanilla beans was examined. In addition to confirming that glucovanillin was the most abundant glucoside present, the glucosides of p-hydroxybenzaldehyde, p-hydroxybenzoic acid and vanillic acid also were identified. Using a combination of IR, MS,1H-NMR and13C-NMR, the structure of glucovanillin was proven to be 4-(beta-D-glucopyranosyloxy)-3-methoxybenzaldehyde.
