AbstractThe challenges of design of programming systems, file organization and manipulation, and user‐oriented query languages have held the spotlight in the development of data processing support to systems for retrieval of scientific literature. At BIOSIS, development of such a system from the pragmatic viewpoint of providing viable self‐supporting retrieval service from a data base of more than two million references has resulted in focusing attention on supporting the formulation of the information need into an effective computer search specification. AbstractThis paper describes the development and application of an algorithm which generates non‐linear representations of English text. The algorithm uses the results of a syntactic analysis system and a set of rules which prescribe linkages to generate a graph of a sentence. The shape of these graphs corresponds to the syntax of the sentence; the labels correspond to the vocabulary of the sentence and the edge types correspond to case grammar roles. The sentence graphs can then be interconnected at common nodes and analyzed according to common edges. Preliminary experimentation has yielded promising results. AbstractThe Interdisciplinary Doctoral Program in Information Science (IDIS) at the University of Pittsburgh conducted a survey of the need for professionals in information science at three levels of education; B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. About 6,000 questionnaires were sent to potential employers randomly selected from lists of industrial concerns, government agencies, research and educational organizations, defense contractors, and professional associations. A brief survey of the field of information science and a summary of the manpower needs are given.

AbstractSeveral taxonomic philosophers have postulated that classification consists of the three elements:distinction, groupingandhierarchy. Each of these elements is analyzed in turn and it is shown that there is a vast difference between the philosophical base, where distinctions can be distinct, and what might be termed “everyday experience”.Subsequently, the triadic basis of classification is aligned with the well‐known Ogden and Richards semantic triangle and it is shown that both follow the same form. This demonstrates that models of classification cannot be developed from a binary base. AbstractThis paper considers the problem of allocating resources among various locations in an information system where phases of a process are carried out. The approach taken combines queueing theory and dynamic programming. As an illustration of this approach, two prototype problems are considered in some detail: the distribution of computer terminals among various functions requiring access to a computer, and the distribution of personnel among the various phases of the process of cataloging a book. The technique is found to be both efficient and flexible.

AbstractSystematic research on human communication will be enhanced by access to a metalanguage, which analyzes natural language texts rapidly and accurately into their structural counterparts.
