AbstractAn “Inhibitor” is something added to a corrosive liquid to render it non‐corrosive; “passivity” is a change in the metal remaining after it has emerged from the “inhibiting” bath, enabling it to resist liquids which normally would corrode it. The object of the paper is to ask whether passivity is due to (1) a three‐dimensional film (2) a two‐dimensional film (chemisorbed material) or (3) a change within the metal or alloy. The evidence supports the idea that a three‐dimensional film is usually necessary. For instance, iron which has been rendered passive in chromic acid, or has remained in water containing chromate long enough to make it safe to reduce the chromate concentration without risk of rusting, does carry a three‐dimensional film. Doubtless the “decision” between the formation of a protective film or of a soluble salt will be reached at the “chemi‐sorption” stage; but a chemi‐sorbed film does not seem to be capable of protecting the metal from further action by the film‐forming agent or by any liquid which would normally corrode it.There seems to be no clearly established case where intrinsic corrosion‐resistance is obtained by alloying, independent of film‐formation; but the pos

AbstractFrom quantitative data reported by various investigators, it is concluded that the primary passive film on iron has the following properties: (1) 25–100 Å thick, (2) equivalent to 0.01 coulomb/cm2, (3) can oxidize CrO−2to CrO−−4, (4) follows the (Flade) potential relation —0.58 + .058pH(volts).All these properties cannot be accounted for by any of the known oxides of iron. In better accord with the facts is a proposed passive film composed of chemisorbed atomic and molecular oxygen supplemented perhaps by OH and H2O. The free energy of formation is calculated from potential data of Franck to be — 29,900 cal/mol adsorbed O in agreement with independent data for gaseous oxygen chemisorbed on iron surfaces (— 30,500 cal/mol adsorbed O). Thermodynamic calculations show that the film is unstable, moreso in acids than in alkalies. The same kind of film apparently forms on Cr—Fe alloys and on Cr. It is calculated that passivity for these metals is also unstable in acids or alkalies when metal ions or hydroxides are reaction products of the decomposed film. However, spontaneous formation of the adsorbed passive film can occur on exposure of Cr or>20% Cr—Fe alloys to water, contrary to the situation for iron or the low Cr‐Fe alloys. It is possible to show that the passive film on iron is able to oxidize CrO−2to CrO−−4as observed, but that this reaction is not thermodynamically possible for the passive film on Cr or on>12% Cr—Fe alloys.A passive film of chemisorbed oxygen fulfills the conditions of good electrical conductivity and freedom from pores. It is extremely thin (4 to 15 Å) in agreement with Tronstad's optical measurements for the passive film on stainless steels (10 Å). Tronstad's measurements for iron, corrected for a ferric nitrate film forming continuously by corrosion of passive iron in nitric acid, would probably also agree with this lower value. The chemisorbed film decomposes to Fe2O3more than 60 Å thick based on apparent area, which agrees with values reported by others

AbstractThe strikingly large initial effects observed in passivation phenomena are attributed to a temporary change associated with sorption of a suitable specie onto the clean metal in an amount corresponding to about a monolayer. It is agreed that permanent passivity stems from a thin, insoluble film of a compound of the metal but it is suggested that it forms by migration of the metal ion into the array displayed by the sorbed species. It is postulated that the more nearly a complete sorbed monolayer forms before metal ion migration starts the more likely is the formation of a defect‐free, fissure‐free compound film. The thickness of such films should be self‐limiting kinetically and should provide long‐lived passivity because they offer minimum opportunity for meeting of the reactants. In the condition offering optimum protection they are probably amorphous with a minimal number of grain boundaries. Further thickening, by temperature increase, by large applied potential, or by increased reactivity of the environment, should lead to crystallization and increased porosity by the introduction of more grain boundary paths, actual fissures, and increased lattice permeability. This results in loss of passivity unless the coherent sorption‐initiated film can be regenerated under the external scale. The effect of solution species either on activation or on passivation are associated with permeation of the “non‐porous” film or with adsorption competition which either aids or interferes with regeneration of the sorption

AbstractThe electrochemical behaviour of chromium, nickel and stainless steel (grade 18–8) was studied by the potentiostatic method in a broad range of polarizations embracing the region of the anodic passivity of these metals. The steady dissolution rate (Ist) as a function of the potential for all the investigated metals was found to be expressed by curves similar in shape. The shifting of the potential towards positive values from the passivity potential is accompanied first by a decrease of the quantityIstaccording to a Tafel line; afterwards, in a rather broad range of potentials, this rate remains constant. Beyond a certain potential (the overpassivity potential) in the positive direction we again observe a rise of the dissolution rate according to a Tafel line, which has a slope close to the ordinary values for anodic reactions. The overpassivity potential depends on the nature of the metal and thepHof the solution. It was established that the electrochemical behaviour of chromium, nickel and stainless steel rendered passive with respect to the reaction of anodic dissolution is analogous to the electrochemical behaviour of platinum rendered passive with respect to the reaction of H2ionization.The measured quantities of differential capacitance and ohmic resistance of the steel electrode, as well as the change experienced by these quantities with the potential, lead to the conclusion that steel passivity does not involve the formation of an oxide film on its surface. This conclusion is in agreement with the observed similarity of the capacitance curve obtained for steel with the corresponding curve for platinum. In the case of platinum the absence of oxide layers on the surface of the metal in the investigated region of polarization is a firmly established fact.It was further established that the obtained experimental data lend themselves to a consistent explanation if we assume that the passivity of the investigated metals is a specific case of the widespread phenomenon of the change of the kinetics (overvoltage) of an electrodic reaction as a result of a change in the state of the electrodic surface, caused in turn by the chemico‐adsorptional interaction of surface atoms of the metal with solution components and reaction products. In the cases examined the kinetic retardation of the anodic reactions appears to set in as a result of the activated adsorption of the oxygen of water. In the light of these considerations an explanation is advanced for the observed dependence of the passivity potential of chromium on thepH of the solution. The retardation of the dissolution process with time and potential continues only until a certain potential is reached. Beyond this potential in the positive direction the process can proceed through another reaction, the formation of ions of a higher degree of oxidation. The view is advanced that in explaining the mechanism of the action of specifically adsorbed anions and the oxygen of water on the kinetics of an electrodic reaction, it is necessary to take into consideration both the change in the nature of the reacting particle as a result of adsorption and the change in its energy state on the surface of the metal and in the volume of the solut
