摘要:
As a lover of birds who has noted regularly for over twenty‐five years all he saw in Egypt I have been most interested to read Col. Meinertzhagen's ‘Nicoll's Birds of Egypt’ (1930). The following notes in most cases amplify those of Meinertzhagen; in others they show where my observations do not appear to have coincided wit

摘要:
Thelate Prof. Sushkin, shortly before his death, was engaged on a revision of the races ofSturnus vulgaris, for which purpose he assembled all the examples available in Russia, a great many of them breeding birds, and others were loaned him from private collections in England. Altogether he examined and compared over 2000 specimens. The Professor certainly never finished, and possibly never even started to write out, his paper on this difficult group; but before his death he sent to me an outline of his results in the form of a private letter (18 July, 1927), which seems worth putting on record, especially as it will be some years before anyone gets together so large a series of eastern forms for examination.—E

摘要:
Thefollowing notes were made by us in the spring of 1932 in the course of a short holiday spent in South and Central Portugal. We left Southampton at noon on 2 April by the R.M.S.P. ‘Alcantara,’ and landed at Lisbon at noon on 5 April, and the same evening we reached Setubal. After that our itinerary was as follows:—8 April from SetubalviâFaro to Villa Real de St. Antonio on the Guadiana River at the extreme south‐east of Portugal; 12 April from Villa Real de St. AntonioviâFaro and Portimão to Monchique; 15 April to Portimão; 16 April to Faro; 17 April to Setubal; 21 April to Lisbon; 23 April to Luso‐Bussaco, from which place trips were made to Coimbra, Aveiro, and Pereira; and we left for Englan

摘要:
In‘The Ibis' for 1922 (July, pp. 475‐89, pl. vi.) I made some remarks about certain characters met with in some Charadriine genera. Some of these remarks (pp. 475‐78) were concerned with trying to demonstrate the negligible (if any) part which is directly played by environment in the evolution of colour‐pattern; but a large part of the paper (pp. 478‐89) was taken up in calling attention to a peculiar condition of things for which I suggested the name of “Adumbration of Colour‐pattern.” This phenomenon is well illustrated in plate vi. of the paper referred to, which is again reproduced; but, instead of bearing this title, I may perhaps be allowed to state here that the plate in passing through the press was most unfortunately and quite inexplicably labelled “

摘要:
TheSierra Leone Double‐spurred Francolin varies from a decidedly rufous to a very dark brown hue. The type is figured in Bannerman's ‘Birds of Tropical West Africa,’ vol. i. pl. 1, and a full description given. The fully mature female has two rudimentary spurs on each leg; younger ones have only one spur on each leg, while the youngest have no spur at all. The colour of the legs varies from yellow in the youngest to a greenish‐grey in the oldest. The mature male, of course, shows two fully‐developed spurs on each leg. Occasionally I have shot Bush‐Fowl with one leg amputated just distal to the tibio‐tarsal joint. This may be traumatic occasionally, but is, apparently, due sometimes to a disease similar to ainhum in the West A
